As? female plus size models take to the catwalk, Plus Size Tall asks: where are all the plus size male models? In the modelling industry in general there are less male models than female models and this is reflected in the plus size industry. Add to that the fact that the plus size industry is a niche market, there does not seem to be budding careers for plus size male models.
Or at least, that was the findings of The Cut magazine last year who wrote an interesting article called Where Are All the Plus-Size Male Models? They found that because the market for big and tall men is so small, there is not enough work for plus size male models. Another issue for a male model is that they are paid much less then their female counterparts making the job far less lucrative. A plus size male model is generally defined as a male who is around 6?3? or taller with a size XL shirt. Therefore, those models that do find work tend to be ex athletes who are big and muscular.
Another barrier to entering the male plus size model industry is the perception of what a plus size male is. Whilst women and their curves are seen as sexy, men?s curves are seen as being on their tummy and not sexy. ?Greg Chan, a men?s booker for Wilhelmina says ?Women?s ?plus size? is based on the fact that curves can be sexy. The equivalent of curves on a man is a beer gut and love handles and that?s not sexy, unless it?s the movie Hitch or something with Jack Black??
The creator of Full Figured Fashion Week New York, Gwen DeVoe, believes there are no plus size male models because the male big and tall industry is so limited that there is nothing to model. However, this does not mean that big and tall men do not want more of a fashion choice. Gwen says ?For that to happen, all kinds of men would have to vocalize an interest in fashion. Number one, we need the big and tall guys to have a louder voice, and that?s what we did with plus-size female models. Just like women, men want to see what clothes will look like on body types like their own.?
One agency who champions plus size male models is the BGM model agency who recently signed Australian plus size model James Richard Aitken who also featured in June?s Plus Model Magazine (read: Behold! The arrival of the top plus size male model, James Richard Aitken). James is breaking the plus size male model athletic stereotype. He told online magazine Jezebel ?I want to make guys who aren?t skinny or who don?t have amazing muscular bodies feel comfortable too?men also need reassuring.?
