Is the Gospel of Jesus' Wife a Forgery?

A scrap of papyrus from the early Christian era that refers to Jesus having a wife has met with extreme skepticism since its unveiling 11 days ago. Many scholars have declared the so-called "Gospel of Jesus' Wife" a modern forgery ? one that probably postdates Dan Brown's 2003 novel, "The Da Vinci Code." Others say that conclusion is too hasty.

What are the experts' arguments for and against its authenticity? And will the world ever know for sure whether this dogma-defying artifact is real?

The torn, business card-size fragment found instant fame when Harvard historian Karen King announced its discovery last Tuesday (Sept. 18), because it bears the startling line: "Jesus said to them, 'My wife ?'"?The manuscript is written in Coptic, the language of early Christians living in Egypt.?Although the beginning and end of each line of the manuscript are missing, it could be interpreted as a record of a conversation between Jesus and his disciples, in which the disciples tell Jesus: "Mary [Magdalene] is not worthy of it," and Jesus responds that his wife ? presumably Mary ? "will be able to be his disciple."

King has tentatively dated the artifact to the fourth century, and thinks it may be a copy of a gospel (an account of Jesus' life) written in Greece in the second century, when there was controversy among Christians over the discipleship of Mary Magdalene. If authentic, the gospel suggests some early Christians believed Jesus and Mary were married.?[Translation of Papyrus]

A sloppy fake

However, scholars have identified several peculiarities that have led many to believe the manuscript is a forgery. They say the text was written sometime in the last 50 years, and probably the last decade, upon a blank piece of ancient papyrus that the forger could easily have picked up on the antiquities market.

First, the writing is sloppy. Compared with authentic Coptic papyri, in which letters are written with varying thickness and subtle curves and details, the letters in the Gospel of Jesus' Wife are formed by rigid, straight strokes of equal thickness. In a YouTube video posted Friday (Sept. 28), Christian Askeland, a Coptic scholar based in Germany, explained that the letters look unnatural, as if written by someone with a very limited knowledge of the language.

If a forgery, it's clearly not the work of a professional, but Askeland doesn't think it was written by a fourth-century amateur, either. "He's obviously not writing in a really formal kind of way, but he's not doing the kind of idiosyncrasies you see in a typical informal hand or in a semi-literary text or something like that," he said.

Second, several experts have pointed out that the scribe does not seem to have used either of the writing instruments common to the time period: a stylus (Roman metal pen) or a calamus (Egyptian reed pen). The blotchiness of the letters and what look like brushstrokes in one place suggest the author instead used a paintbrush ? an unorthodox writing tool in ancient Egypt. (Other experts have countered that the pen may simply have been dull.)

Third, the textual content raises questions. Despite much of the manuscript being cut off, its meaning is "too easy" to decipher, Askeland said. "If you look at which parts of the manuscript have the subject and the verb staring right at us, it's most of the manuscript." The center-alignment of all the key phrases seems atypical.

Askeland concludes, "It is very probable that it's a fake." [Did Leonard da Vinci Copy His Famous 'Vitruvian Man'?]

Also regarding the textual content of the piece, the New Testament historian Francis Watson of the University of Durham points out that all the snippets in the text except for "my wife" also appear in the Gospel of Thomas, an authentic Coptic gospel that was discovered in Egypt in 1945; the snippets from Thomas have simply been rearranged to create a new meaning. Watson considers it unlikely that an ancient scribe would have borrowed each of his phrases from a contemporary work. "It's much easier to see how a modern compiler with limited ability in Coptic might gratefully avail him- or herself of material extracted from existing Coptic texts," Watson wrote in an article published on his website.

A translation of the Gospel of Thomas was published in 1956. Watson thinks the Gospel of Jesus' Wife must have been forged sometime since then. "I have a suspicion it's post-2003 as well. That was the year the "Da Vinci Code" was published, and this could have provided the inspiration," he wrote. (In Dan Brown's novel, Jesus is married to Mary Magdalene.) [Who Was Jesus, the Man?]

Answers written in ink

Not everyone is ready to trash the scrap of papyrus. "While these are interesting arguments, I certainly don't think they're conclusive," Paul Dilley, a scholar of early Christianity at the University of Iowa working on non-canonical literature and Coptic, told Life's Little Mysteries.

For one thing, the scribe who wrote the Gospel of Jesus' Wife could simply have had bad penmanship. To the argument that the phrases in the gospel are cut-and-pasted from the Gospel of Thomas, Michael Peppard, assistant professor of theology at Fordham University, rejoins that most of the phrases were in common usage, and so their appearance in both texts is just a small but unsurprising coincidence.

Furthermore, "there is one word that does not match its use in the Gospel of Thomas or its first entry in Coptic dictionaries, and it's the crucial word under discussion: 'wife' (hime)," Peppard writes on his blog. "The most common version of this word is s-hime (with an aspirated 'h')," he writes.

It would be odd for a modern forger to choose a less common version of the "headline-grabbing" word.

And Peppard said it would also be odd for a modern forger to manage to fade and fray the papyrus fragment authentically enough to convince Roger Bagnall, director of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University and one of the world's most respected papyrologists. Bagnall says the absorption of the ink by the papyrus, especially in faded and damaged areas, stands up to scrutiny. "It's hard to construct a scenario that is at all plausible in which somebody fakes something like this," he told the New York Times. "The world is not really crawling with crooked papyrologists."

With compelling arguments on both sides, the marital status of Jesus ? or, at least, early opinions on the subject ? may come down to chemistry. The chemical composition of the manuscript's ink will be tested at Harvard in mid-October.

"I think that the results of an ink test would be conclusive," Dilley wrote in an email. "A carbon dating of the papyrus would not be conclusive, because if it is a modern forgery, the forger could have obtained an ancient papyrus fragment relatively easily, and then written over it.?It would be far more difficult to reproduce ancient ink accurately."

An authentic Coptic manuscript would most likely be written in carbon-gum ink, made from carbon soot and gum arabic (made from the sap of acacia trees).?But even if the tests reveal the right kind of ink of the right age, naysayers have argued that a clever forger could have bought an ancient scrap of papyrus, burned part of it to produce carbon soot, used the soot to make ink, then used the ink to write the phony gospel on the remaining fragment.

I Fight for the Phoque.: Exclusivity Before Commitment

I thought girl talk was supposed to clarify, sort through, and expand on man issues. In France I've missed out on this kind of banter for the past 2 years, and now I can say, returning from an evening of presque non-stop man/dating/interpreting of hidden messages chatter, I have never been more confused.?

Tonight I was told that the "girlfriend/boyfriend" thing works for guys, because they can date a woman for years and never consider marrying her, but it doesn't work for women. Women apparently don't have?monogamous?sexual relationships without attachment and a goal of commitment. The open-ended intimacy doesn't work with us. So! What is the solution according to my gal pals? No committed relationships until marriage:?in other words,?no exclusivity until someone is willing to offer commitment in exchange.?

Apparently?it's ok to stop having sex with other people, but dating should remain open until the one "steps up" (I prefer sacks up) and is ready to give you commitment in exchange for ?your fidelity and exclusivity. (Which, as the theory goes, would work since women can't give that without getting attached.)

This tends to go against my current belief system which tells me good love and good relationships come from monogamy and intimacy, so go for it, but my?attached?and insecure side wonders if I'm doing it all wrong. ?

Is it ok to give it all? Or are we giving it all to soon??

Movie review: Not many laughs in 'Hotel Transylvania' | The Salt ...

This film image released by Sony pictures shows Dracula, voiced by Adam Sandler, left, and Johnnystein, voiced by Andy Samberg in a scene from "Hotel Transylvania." (AP Photo/Sony Pictures)

Does everything Adam Sandler touch these days turn to crap? Even when he?s a voice in a cartoon, as in "Hotel Transylvania," Sandler?s one-take, everything-I-say-is-funny attitude spoils the fun.

Sandler provides the voice to Count Dracula, here a worried single dad who has built an exclusive resort hotel that caters to human-fearing monsters and provides a haven for Drac?s daughter, Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez). For her 118th birthday, Mavis wants to spread her bat wings and see the world from which Dracula has shielded her.

?Hotel Transylvania?

Opens Friday, Sept. 28, at theaters everywhere; rated PG for some rude humor, action and scary images; 91 minutes. For more movie reviews, visit nowsaltlake.com/movies.

As her birthday party gets rolling, a stray human hiker, Jonathan (voiced by Andy Samberg, Sandler?s "That?s My Boy" co-star), wanders into the hotel, and Dracula works to keep him from scaring the monstrous guests. (Any similarity between this plot and Pixar?s "Monsters, Inc." is, no doubt, coincidental.)

Director Genndy Tartakovsky (the creator of "Dexter?s Laboratory" and "Samurai Jack") keeps the computer animation lively, with some inventive touches and a constantly moving camera view to highlight the 3-D effects.

The voice casting is uninspired, as Sandler assembles his cadre of buddies (Kevin James voicing Frankenstein, David Spade as the Invisible Man, Steve Buscemi as the Wolfman) for recording sessions that were probably more fun for them than they are for us.

Labour's immigration pains | Progress | News and debate from the ...

Crowd at Liverpool Street Station

There are still some senior Labour politicians, and a significant section of the liberal media, who continue to deny that immigration is one of the issues that most damages the Left.? Indeed, until the last couple of years, the standard response to any suggestion that immigration itself was problematic was to imply that this was racist. No debate was permitted, even as the number of arrivals continued to grow.

Immigration was a ?good thing?. Immigrants helped a dynamic economy become even more competitive, they filled jobs that nobody else wanted to do, and they kept inflation and wage rises at low levels even when the economy was buoyant.

Even today, barely a week goes by without the IPPR, or Jonathan Portes arguing that immigration has been good for the economy, and that the benefits of mass immigration far outweigh the costs.

The assertion that such a huge increase in the number of workers coming to the UK has had any effect on wages or employment has been repeatedly denied. This is rather astonishing as it will, after all, be the first time in economic history that an increased supply (of labour) has had no impact on the price (that is, wages).

So, have the fundamental laws of economics changed? Either there has been a paradigm shift or, more likely, the effect on wages have been ignored because it hasn?t (yet) concerned the affluent middle class

In any case, there are alternative interpretations. A House of Lords report found that there has been a downward effect on wages, especially for those at the bottom rung of the labour market. And the recent report by the Migration Advisory Committee, confirmed that immigration does have an effect on wages, decreasing those of lower-paid workers. In particular, the MAC estimated that: ?an extra 100 non-EU migrants are initially associated with 23 fewer native people employed?.

After losing the wages and employment argument, however, the same centre-Left pro-immigrationists argue that GDP has increased. Again, the House of Lords report pointed out that GDP, which measures the total output created by immigrants and pre-existing residents in the UK, is ?an irrelevant and misleading measure for the economic impacts of immigration on the resident population. The total size of an economy is not an indicator of prosperity or of residents? living standards.?

To put it bluntly, increasing numbers of voters are not prepared to pay the price of over-crowding, a diminished green belt and public services stretched to breaking point for an additional percentage point of GDP growth. The Left ignored the broader effects on quality of life, with increasing demands on housing provision, classroom sizes, traffic congestion or for health and social services. But there was no planning at all for the arrival of such large numbers as policy makers seemed to forget that migrant workers also need somewhere to live, that they travel, that they have families, and that they get ill.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the former editor of Prospect magazine, David Goodhart, was right when he argued that there is an increasingly acute dilemma, ? for progressives who want plenty of both solidarity (high social cohesion and generous welfare paid out of a progressive tax system) and diversity (equal respect for a wide range of peoples, values and ways of life).?

Now, as draconian spending cuts are being implemented the answer to these questions is becoming increasingly acute. At its heart is a problem that Michael Young and Peter Willmott?s Family and Kinship in East London highlighted half a century ago. Should the (possibly greater) needs of newly arrived immigrants trump the greater ?entitlement? of those who have lived longer in a community?

Who deserves a share of the cake, and how large should their share be? Is social housing allocation, for example, a matter of long term residency, nationality or hardship? Should benefits depend on how much one has contributed to society? What?s fair?

The last Labour government failed to introduce restrictions on the citizens of the new members of the European Union coming to work in the UK until it was far too late. In thrall to the demands of business for cheap and flexible labour, a nominally left of centre government lost control of its borders. And for too long, too many on the Left did not permit an open political debate about immigration, denouncing any criticism as racist.

Immigration remains a huge issue for voters, which is only likely to grow as recession deepens (which it will). Labour lost almost every seat in the south-east outside London and needs to win them back if it wants to regain power. But this does not mean that the people of Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Sussex are racist, or even Little Englanders. Britain is a hugely tolerant country which believes in fairness. It also has great ? and legitimate ? concerns about immigration. It is time for Labour and the Left to admit that too much immigration, too quickly, requires new answers rather than continuing to defend old nostrums.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who led the newspaper to new levels of influence and profit while standing up for press freedom and editorial independence during some of the most significant moments in 20th-century journalism, died Saturday. He was 86.

Sulzberger, who went by the nickname "Punch" and served with the Marine Corps before joining the Times staff as a reporter, and then following his father and grandfather as publisher, died at his home in Southampton, N.Y., after a long illness, his family announced.

During his three-decade-long tenure, the newspaper won 31 Pulitzer prizes, published the Pentagon Papers and won a libel case victory in New York Times vs. Sullivan that established important First Amendment protections for the press.

"Punch, the old Marine captain who never backed down from a fight, was an absolutely fierce defender of the freedom of the press," his son, and current Times publisher, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., said in a statement. He said his father's refusal to back down in the paper's free-speech battles "helped to expand access to critical information and to prevent government censorship and intimidation."

In an era of declining newspaper readership, the Times' weekday circulation climbed from 714,000 when Sulzberger became publisher in 1963 to 1.1 million upon his retirement as publisher in 1992. Over the same period, the annual revenues of the Times' corporate parent rose from $100 million to $1.7 billion.

"Above all, he took the quality of the product up to an entirely new level," the late Katharine Graham, chairwoman of The Washington Post Co., said at the time Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's title. When she died in 2001, he returned the praise, saying she "used her intelligence, her courage and her wit to transform the landscape of American journalism."

Sulzberger was the only grandson of Adolph S. Ochs (pronounced ox), the son of Bavarian immigrants who took over the Times in 1896 and built it into the nation's most influential newspaper. The family retains a controlling interest to this day, holding a separate block of Class B shares that have more powerful voting rights than the company's publicly traded shares.

Power was thrust on Sulzberger at the age of 37 after the sudden death of his brother-in-law in 1963. He had been in the Times executive suite for eight years in a role he later described as "vice president in charge of nothing."

But Sulzberger directed the Times' evolution from an encyclopedic paper of record to a more reader-friendly product that reached into the suburbs and across the nation.

During his tenure, the Times started a national edition, bought its first color presses, and introduced popular as well as lucrative new sections covering topics such as science, food and entertainment.

A key figure in the transformation was A.M. Rosenthal, executive editor from 1977 to 1986. Rosenthal, who died in 2006, called Sulzberger "probably the best publisher in modern American history."

Sulzberger also improved the paper's bottom line, pulling it and its parent company out of a tailspin in the mid-1970s and lifting both to unprecedented profitability a decade later.

In 1992, Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's job to his 40-year-old son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., but remained chairman of The New York Times Co.

Sulzberger retired as chairman and chief executive of the company in 1997. His son then was named chairman. Sulzberger stayed on the Times Co. board of directors until 2002.

Significant free-press and free-speech precedents were established during Sulzberger's years as publisher, most notably the Times vs. Sullivan case. It resulted in a landmark 1964 Supreme Court ruling that shielded the press from libel lawsuits by public officials unless they could prove actual malice.

In 1971 the Times led the First Amendment fight to keep the government from suppressing the Pentagon Papers, a series of classified reports on the Vietnam War. Asked by a reporter who at the Times made the decision to publish the papers, Sulzberger gestured toward his chest and silently mouthed, "me."

Sulzberger read the more than 7,000 pages of the Pentagon Papers before deciding to publish them. After Sulzberger read the papers, he was asked what he thought. "Oh, I would think about 20 years to life," he responded.

But in a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court eventually sided with the Times and The Washington Post, which had begun publishing the papers a few days after the Times.

"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level," said Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt. "The Associated Press benefited from his wisdom, both during his years on the board of directors and his thoughtful engagement in the years that followed."

Gay Talese, who worked at the Times as a reporter when Sulzberger took over and chronicled the paper's history in his book "The Kingdom and the Power," called him "a brilliant publisher. He far exceeded the achievements of his father in both making the paper better and more profitable at a time when papers are not as good as they used to be."

In their book "The Trust," a history of the Ochs-Sulzberger family and its stewardship of the paper, Susan E. Tifft and Alex S. Jones cited Sulzberger's "common sense and unerring instincts."

In an interview in 1990 with New York magazine, Sulzberger was typically candid about the paper's readership.

"We're not New York's hometown newspaper," he said. "We're read on Park Avenue, but we don't do well in Chinatown or the east Bronx. We have to approach journalism differently than, say, the Sarasota Herald Tribune, where you try to blanket the community."

New York City's mayor from 1978 to 1989, Ed Koch, said Sulzberger also had great humility, despite his extraordinary influence.

"With enormous power and authority he was a humble a person as you could ever meet," Koch said Saturday. "People with enormous power often dominate a room. He did not. And yet the power and authority was there."

In the mid-1980s Sulzberger authorized the building of a $450 million color printing and distribution plant across the Hudson River in Edison, N.J., part of a plan to get all printing out of cramped facilities in the Times building in Manhattan.

Sulzberger was born in New York City on Feb. 5, 1926, the only son of Arthur Hays Sulzberger and his wife, Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger, Adolph's only child. One of his three sisters was named Judy, and from early on he was known as "Punch," from the puppet characters Punch and Judy.

Sulzberger's grandfather led the paper until his death in 1935, when he was followed by Sulzberger's father, who remained at the helm until he retired in 1961.

Meanwhile, Arthur served in the Marines during World War II and, briefly, in Korea. He later observed, in a typically self-deprecating remark, that "My family didn't worry about me for a minute. They knew that if I got shot in the head it wouldn't do any harm."

Except for a year at The Milwaukee Journal, 1953-54, the younger Sulzberger spent his entire career at the family paper. He joined after graduating from Columbia College in 1951. He worked in European bureaus for a time and was back in New York by 1955, but found he had little to do.

Sulzberger had not been expected to assume power at the paper for years. His father passed control to Orvil E. Dryfoos, his oldest daughter's husband, in 1961. But two years later Dryfoos died suddenly of heart disease at 50. Punch Sulzberger's parents named him publisher, the fourth family member to hold the title.

"We had all hoped that Punch would have many years more training before having to take over," said his mother, Iphigene. Sulzberger relied on senior editors and managers for advice, and quickly developed a reputation as a solid leader.

At various times, Sulzberger was a director or chairman of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, American Newspaper Publishers Association and American Press Institute. He was a director of The Associated Press from 1975 to 1984.

Sulzberger married Barbara Grant in 1948, and the couple had two children, Arthur Jr. and Karen. After a divorce in 1956, Sulzberger married Carol Fox. The couple had a daughter, Cynthia, and Sulzberger adopted Fox's daughter from a previous marriage, Cathy.

Carol Sulzberger died in 1995. The following year, Sulzberger married Allison Cowles, the widow of William H. Cowles 3rd, who was the president and publisher of The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Chronicle of Spokane, Wash.

Bomb kills 2 police near Afghan training academy

(AP) ? Afghan authorities say a roadside bomb has killed two policemen in Herat province of western Afghanistan, just hours before a ceremony to hand a nearby police training academy over from NATO to Afghan control.

Raouf Ahmedi, a spokesman for the Afghan police commander for the western region, says one of the policemen killed in Saturday's explosion was a teacher at the academy in Adraskan district. He says two other policemen were injured by the remote-controlled bomb that exploded as their vehicle passed.

Last week, a bomb in a parked motorcycle exploded outside the training center, killing two security guards.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the latest attack, but it matched the pattern of Taliban strikes that typically target Afghan forces and government workers.

New Study Estimates the Annual Cost of Crime to be $3.2 Trillion

?The Cost of Crime,? a new study by David A. Anderson, Centre College?s Paul G. Blazer Professor of Economics, quantifies the burden of crime by estimating the annual cost of crime in the United States.

Danville, KY. (PRWEB) September 28, 2012

?The Cost of Crime,? a new study by David A. Anderson, Centre College?s Paul G. Blazer Professor of Economics, quantifies the burden of crime by estimating the annual cost of crime in the United States.

The study appears in Foundations and Trends in Microeconomics, Vol. 7: No 3.

Many studies measure crime by looking at raw numbers of thefts, murders and other criminal activities. Anderson warns that these numbers can be misleading, especially when the number of crimes goes in one direction while the severity of crimes goes in the other. For example, Anderson notes that ?a recent decrease in the number of thefts was accompanied by such a large increase in the average amount stolen that total victim losses actually increased.? Anderson says that scale issues make cost a better gauge of crime?s burden than counts of crimes.

Studies that do look at the cost of crime tend to focus on direct costs?dollars worth of stolen items, policing costs and the cost of the prison system. Yet Anderson finds that most of the costs of crime are indirect and include the opportunity cost of time, the costs of fear and agony, and private expenditures on crime prevention.

?When we consider the time and money spent locking things up, installing security systems, purchasing protective firearms, and providing medical care for victims,? Anderson says, ?the full cost of crime is revealed to be much larger.?

This is Anderson?s first study on the topic in 13 years. His 1999 study found the annual cost of crime in the United States to be $2.4 trillion (in 2012 dollars).

?The the annual cost of crime in the United States for one year is now about $3.2 trillion dollars, which is roughly the combined cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2001 to 2011,? Anderson says. ?We spend $2.7 trillion a year on health care. The burden of crime exceeds that by half a trillion dollars.?

Quantifying these enormous costs, Anderson says, provides a strong rationale for prioritizing activities that deter criminal activity, including increasing the presence of law enforcement officers and improving education efforts and social programs.

Dan Savage Walks Into a Church and Gets Applauded By A Priest ...

By Nicole Brydson tags: Brooklyn Book Festival, Dan Savage, St. Ann's

Monogamish Panel

Thankfully YouTube has allowed our account to upload more than 15 minutes at a time because this is seriously a great video. Last but not least in our Book Fest video series this year came from the last and likely largest panel of the day featuring Dan Savage.

With marriage equality on everyone?s lips, it still seems valid to ask the question, ?Why marriage?? and ?Why monogamy?? Our authors weigh monogamy, marriage, its alternatives, and what it all means for how we live today. Syndicated sex columnist Dan Savage (The Commitment) has advocated ?monogam-ish? relationships; anthropologist Christopher Ryan, Ph.D. (Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality), argues that monogamy isn't inherent to humans; Kristin Davis (The Manhattan Madam?s Guide to Sex), aka ?The Manhattan Madam,? will provide her insights into the tangled web of sex and commitment; and Eric Klinenberg (Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone) examine what these changing attitudes look like at a societal level. Moderated by Kate Bolick (upcoming Among the Suitors: Single Women I Have Loved).

Watch the video at 19:45 as the openly gay pastor of St. Ann's church pipes up and introduces himself to the liberal gasps from the audience. He belies their anxiety and says, "The foundations of this church haven't shaken to the ground because we grasp for an honest conversation about human relationships and human sexuality," adding later, "I just want to say a public thank you to Dan Savage for It Gets Better."

AK-47s get extreme makeover in new London art show

LONDON (Reuters) - The AK-47, arguably the world's deadliest weapon, gets an extreme makeover in a new art project in London where rifles are ground into metal dust, be-decked with dazzling rhinestones or covered in silver-tinted thorns.

"AKA Peace" is the brainchild of former army reservist and Sunday Times photographer Bran Symondson, who, when serving in Afghanistan, noticed how policemen would decorate their guns.

He managed to attract some of the cream of British contemporary art, with Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Marc Quinn and the Chapman brothers contributing works to an exhibition followed by a charity auction to be held next week.

"We noticed they (Afghan police) would adorn their AK-47s with flowers, stickers, and I realised it was the only possession in their life really so it was a bit like a teenager would pimp up their car in the UK," Symondson said.

"A lot of people say 'am I scared of glorifying the AK-47?' But I think the AK-47 is already glorified. I think the strongest message here is to show it can be used for something else visually and mentally," he told Reuters at a preview.

More than 20 artists were involved, some more famous than others, and their works are on display until September 30 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in central London.

They then travel to nearby auction house Phillips de Pury & Company where they will be sold on October 4, and the proceeds will go to the Peace One Day charity which promotes a global day of ceasefire and non-violence every September 21.

Hirst's contribution is instantly recognisable -- he has "spin painted" his gun in garish colours. Jake and Dinos Chapman have their guns held by two toddlers whose noses have been turned into phalluses.

CONGEALED BLOOD

One of the visitors' favourites was Nancy Fouts's "Dont' Touch", an AK-47 covered in silver-sprayed thorns which, from a distance, look soft and furry.

Palestinian artist Laila Shawa said she was no stranger to the seemingly ubiquitous assault rifle.

"I'm very familiar with AK-47s so for me it was not a very strange feeling to carry the gun, but my first question to Bran was 'how many people did this gun kill?'," she told Reuters, standing next to an AK-47 covered in rhinestones and butterflies and with the barrel sprayed gold.

"In the Middle East, with the turmoil that we have, and as a Palestinian in particular, you find yourself at some point in your life having to defend yourself and that's why I know about it," she added.

Some of the artists confessed to feeling uncomfortable working on weapons once used in battle.

"While cleaning the gun in order to start working on it I went into the barrel of the gun and I found congealed blood and that brought the reality home," said Shawa.

Antony Micallef, whose large black, white and grey canvas features two AK-47s protruding from the head of an undefinable creature like horns, explained that he wanted to try and capture "that primal instinct of violence."

"For me the gun was inherently aggressive so I wanted to amplify that. I could never get away from that feeling."

Because organisers only provided one rifle to each artist, he had to purchase a second which cost him 250 pounds ($405).

Charming Baker punctured his AK-47 with holes to reveal the inside as well as the outside of the weapon.

"I don't feel like I have this naive idea that a gun is just a weapon of destruction," he said. "I'm sure there are guns here that have saved people's lives and their families have been pleased about it. That's the way you use any tool, isn't it?"

Try Home Improvement And Discover New ... - Energy Efficiency

Home improvement projects offer excitement for any homeowner, but can prove to be a tad difficult in some aspects. If you find yourself inexperienced, continue reading this article. The following tips and techniques will help you in your home improvement endeavors.

Making home improvement projects fun is key. Safety and quality should always be at the forefront; however, you should try to have fun with the project. If you don?t, you?ll probably make mistakes. Try getting a professional if this happens to you.

Look into wood cabinets if you are considering replacing your cabinetry. Wood is strong and can handle a lot of tear and wear. Cherry, oak and maple are common woods that are used for cabinets. If you want a different color, they are all easily stained.

Chandeliers have a place in even modest homes today. Some chandeliers are not very expensive at all, and can provide a very elegant look in your dining room. If you also want your chandelier to provide bright lighting and really sparkle, load it up with 200 to 400 watts of light bulbs.

Instead of just rushing into a home improvement project, think about whether the project will pay for itself. The best course of action is to concentrate your efforts on projects that provide the maximum possible benefit for the time and money you spend on them. Different home improvement projects can have vastly different ratios between benefit and cost. Look online to see which home improvement projects add the most value to your home.

Use fruits and flowers to brighten up your kitchen. A fruit bowl or flower arrangement will really make your kitchen sing. This cheap element of decor will definitely brighten up the whole room. Viewing a vase of freshly cut flowers brightens up any day.

Some old shoe boxes can be a great way to add some storage space to a room. You can create great designs by adding leftover wallpaper, or even fabric, as a cover to those old shoe boxes. It is a nice way to add an interesting style to some of your rooms and will help you tackle your storage needs.

Crown molding can be just the thing to make your walls stand out! If you have plain walls, crown molding can spruce them up and add a little flavor to your home. Crown molding really is not that costly and it is simple to install.

If you?re getting a contractor to take on some home improvement projects for you, it?s crucial that you ensure they?re properly insured. If they do any damage to your home, and do not have insurance, you may have to go to court to get money for repairs. You can avoid these problems just by asking for proof.

Add some insulation the next time you renovate your home. Weatherstrip your windows and doors, for example. When you minimize the air flow in and out of your home, you can run your environmental and temperature controls with far better efficiency. These small measures will add up to big savings in the long run.

Think about getting a pergola if you feel like your home is boring. Pergolas have become quite popular in recent years and can add shade and ambiance to the front of a home. A pergola can be installed in as little as one weekend when you enlist the help of your friends.

Add flair and function to the entrance of your home. A coat rack, key holder and storage bench are all items to consider. These additions can also add to the organization in your living space and reduce mess.

Store your building material in between your ceiling rafters or floor joists. You can easily store two by fours or pieces of molding in these spaces. Just nail a few furring strip across those too exposed floor rafters or joists and slip your material inside to store it.

Not only will improving your home increase its overall value, it will also give you a sense of pride and accomplishment. If you are unfamiliar with home improvement work, or even if you are fairly experienced, this article can help you with your project.

Temporary funding for financial emergencies

Financial emergencies have a habit of cropping up just when you least expect them. This is why it is important to prepare for such times by putting some cash away each month in an account that you must keep off limits and even in emergencies withdraw from the funds after a lot of deliberation. We list here some ways you can take precautions and some ways you can get cash in case you are ill prepared or such emergencies.

Taking precautions ? Putting money in the bank

The best way to deal with financial emergencies is to prepare for them. Look at it as something that is bound to happen, except you don?t know when. This way you will be able to set aside a fixed amount of cash each month and will be able to fall back on it when difficult times come calling. Setting aside an amount that will go into a term deposit is the safest way you can get your hands on some cash when you need it most.

Investing in gold

Gold is a great investment. There is no limit to the quantity you can invest in and have ready liquidity whenever you need it. If an emergency comes calling you will not only be able to cash in on the money you used to buy the gold but the gold will have appreciated as well.

Get yourself a credit card or two

A credit card can be a very handy source for some emergency cash. You should get yourself a couple of cards. Use one for your daily shopping and other purchases and repay the debt each month, this will help you build a healthy credit history that will come handy when you need to apply for a loan, and you will also have the card handy for financial emergencies. Keep the other card, or cards, away just in case you need extra cash in an emergency.

Get a payday loan

If you are in dire straits and need some urgent cash, you could avail of a payday loan that takes a few hours, or at the most 24, to get money into your checking account. The problem here is the high processing cost and the fact that you have to repay it by the next payday or the fines and fees are exorbitant ? more than 25 percent.

Apply for a personal loan

If you have a few days to get the cash you need, you could apply for a personal fast loan from your bank or local creditor. They usually process it within a week and do not ask what you need it for. You can spend it on anything you want. However, a personal loan comes at a higher rate of interest.

Home Equity ? if you need a lot of cash

If you need a lot of money you could apply for a home equity loan. This is a loan against your part of the property you are repaying the mortgage for. The other part is owned by the mortgage company. The more of the mortgage you repay the greater your equity in the property. This equity can be evaluated and you can get as much as 90 percent of the value of your home equity.

However, nothing beats having money saved up in the bank. So, start saving now.

Reducing acrylamide levels in french fries

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The process for preparing frozen, par-fried potato strips -- distributed to some food outlets for making french fries -- can influence the formation of acrylamide in the fries that people eat, a new study has found.

Published in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study identifies potential ways of reducing levels of acrylamide, which the National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer regard as a "probable human carcinogen."

Acrylamide forms naturally during the cooking of many food products. Donald S. Mottram and colleagues explain that while acrylamide formation in fried potato products is inevitable, this research aims to better understand the chemistry involved, and to use computer models to determine how to minimize acrylamide levels in practice. The special feature of this approach is that, for the first time, it has been possible to link changes in natural potato components (glucose, fructose, amino acids, moisture) occurring during preparation and cooking with the extent of acrylamide formation. Such a rigorous approach has only been possible through collaboration between the food industry and food chemists from different disciplines.

The commercial process (which includes potato selection and sorting, cutting, blanching, sugar augmentation, drying, frying and freezing), in combination with final cooking, generates the color, texture and flavor that consumers expect in french fries. This model facilitates evaluation of various processing and final cooking parameters to develop products with lower acrylamide. Additionally, the authors confirm previous reports, which found that minimizing the ratio of fructose to glucose in cut potato strips can reduce the amount of acrylamide that ends up in the french fries.

Prominent Kremlin critic faces criminal charges

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian tycoon who has financed a newspaper critical of the Kremlin and supported the opposition has been charged with hooliganism and assault for punching a businessman during a television talk show. He dismissed the criminal case as politically motivated.

Russia's top investigative agency, which announced the charges Wednesday, said the defendant, Alexander Lebedev, cannot leave Moscow while the probe is under way. In Russia, filing charges marks the start of a criminal investigation, which may or may not lead to a trial.

Lebedev said in comments carried by the Interfax news agency that he considers the charges against him political and "completely made up."

He could face up to seven years in prison, if he's convicted on hooliganism charges similar to those that were filed against three members of the feminist rock band Pussy Riot. They were sentenced to two years each last month for performing a "punk prayer" against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral.

The charges refer to a September 2011 incident when Lebedev punched property developer Sergei Polonsky during a TV discussion of the financial crisis, sending him tumbling to the ground.

After the recording, Polonsky complained he had sustained a hand injury and that his jeans were ripped. According to the charges, however, an expert medical opinion dated Aug. 31 determined that Polonsky also received bruises to his hips and face that he did not realize were harmful at the time.

Russia's hooliganism statute also requires proof the accused grossly violated social norms. Though Polonsky began the exchange by pointing at Lebedev and saying "I just feel like whacking somebody in the face right now," the charges assert he was not referring to anyone in particular and that Lebedev was "motivated by political hatred."

A few days after the incident, Putin referred to the fight as "hooliganism," and a criminal investigation was launched in October. Putin has taken an increasingly tough course against dissent after massive protests against his rule last winter, with searches and interrogation of opposition activists and the passage of repressive bills.

Lebedev, whose net worth was reported by Forbes magazine to be $1.1 billion, made his money in the banking industry. He has financed the Novaya Gazeta newspaper, which is fiercely critical of the Kremlin, and the British papers the Independent and the Evening Standard.

Lebedev's son, Yevgeny, who owns the two British publications, tweeted that his father is "being targeted by people who don't like his stance against corruption, and hate Novaya." He later described the charges as "extraordinarily disproportionate."

"My father has been targeted because of his determination to fight against corruption and to be a crusader for democracy in a country where this has not always been welcome," Lebedev's son said in a statement. "I really hope that this does not presage a new phase of crackdowns on those who speak out against injustice."

The tycoon had said last month that he was being forced to sell his assets because of pressure by Russia's Federal Security Service, the main KGB successor agency. He said the pressure was rooted in corruption investigations by Novaya Gazeta, alleging that some of the service's officers were involved in corruption.

Lebedev and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev own a 49 percent stake in the newspaper, while the remaining shares are controlled by Novaya's staffers.

Novaya Gazeta's relentless criticism of the Kremlin, and its investigations into official corruption, have put many of its journalists under fire. Four of the paper's reporters have been killed since 2000, including Anna Politkovskaya, a fierce critic of the Kremlin and its policies in Chechnya. She was gunned down in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building in 2006. Others have been harassed and physically attacked.

Lebedev has also supported Alexei Navalny, a charismatic anti-corruption crusader and blogger who was a key driving force against massive protests last winter against Putin's rule. Lebedev, a KGB veteran like Putin, so far has avoided blaming the president for his woes, pointing the finger at security services for the campaign against him.

Lebedev's lawyer, Genri Reznik, told Interfax that the newly announced charges come as a "punishment for Lebedev's social activities, his fight against corruption, his funding of an opposition newspaper and support for Navalny."

Lebedev owns the National Reserve Bank and has a stake in Russian flag carrier Aeroflot as well as his own Red Wings airline.

? Speaking at the company?s midyear meeting last week, Takanuba Ito, president and chief executive of Honda Motor, said the automaking division would introduce vehicles in the next three years that incorporated single-motor, two-motor and three-motor hybrid drive systems. The three-motor configuration would be applied first to the Hybrid Sport version of the coming Acura RLX flagship sedan, followed by the NSX supercar. (Honda)

? To further solidify its position among passenger-car brands for leadership in hybrid technology, Toyota announced on Monday its intention to bring 21 new hybrid vehicles to market by the end of 2015. The automaker, however, did not disclose how the models would be split among markets, let alone what would constitute a ?new hybrid vehicle.? (Toyota)

? Toyota was less sanguine on the prospect for wide adoption of purely electric vehicles, according to a report from Reuters.
