AT&T has finally unwrapped?its "Mobile Share" plans and this will finally let you sign up for a bucket of data that can be spread out through multiple devices. This comes a few weeks after Verizon introduced its own shared data plan, so we thought it woudl be nice to compare the two.?
One thing is clear: we're now in a data-centric world from the carriers. Each shared plan gives you unlimited text and calls with the access fee and you now get to choose how much data you want to pay for. The minimum on a smartphone for unlimited talk and text is now $45 on AT&T and $40 for Verizon.?
You'll now have to pay a monthly fee for other devices that you want to use that pool of data, as tablets like the iPad?will cost $10, hotspots, netbooks and data dongles will cost $20 and a basic phone will cost $30. Remember, these prices don't include access to data.?
On AT&T, you'll pay $40 for 1GB, $70 for 4GB, $90 for 6GB and $120 for 10GB. Once you start paying for 4GB of data or more, the monthly smartphone access fee drops by $5 for each tier. If you're a single person, the bare minimum for smartphone service will be $85 and this includes unlimited talk and text to go along with 1GB of data.
Over on Verizon, the first 1GB will cost $50, $60 for 2GB, $70 for 4GB and $80 for 6GB. Verizon also offers 10GB and 20GB plans and these could come in handy if you need a family plan or if you use a lot of data. The minimum cost of service on Verizon for a smartphone is now $90 and this includes unlimited talk and text with 1GB of data.
There are other little tweaks, as tethering is no longer a separate charge. What do you think about the new shared data plans? These do seem like good ways to split smartphones in family plans but a single user may not be as happy as the previous unlimited plans.?
