Expert on health assessments to speak in Davidson - DavidsonNews

Posted on 29 March 2013.

Town of Davidson
Dr. Martin Birley, a pioneer of health impact assessments, will give a public talk on Friday, April 19, at noon at Davidson Town Hall, 216 S. Main St., Davidson. He?ll address the topic ?Incorporating Health Impact Assessment Into Government and Corporate Activities.?

In 2011, the Town of Davidson received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct health impact assessments (HIA) in Davidson. Katherine Hebert, our Davidson Design for Life Coordinator has conducted three HIA so far, and is currently working on four additional HIA. She will analyze the Davidson Pedestrian Plan, the upcoming Parks and Recreation Master Plan, food accessibility in Davidson, and universal design in housing. Her goal is to influence the decision-making in a manner that increases our citizens? health.

?The Davidson Design for Life program is pleased to host Dr. Martin Birley to help educate citizens on how health impact assessments can be used by governments and businesses to consider the health impact of their decisions,? said Hebert. ?It?s quite an honor to have someone of his stature come to town.?

Dr. Martin Birley is an independent international consultant in Health Impact Assessment, former Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, UK, and former Senior Health Advisor on HIA at Shell. He has been at the forefront of global health impact assessment for over 28 years. He was involved in the development of the discipline since its early days in tropical medicine, to its later emergence as an instrument both for healthy public policy in the UK and Europe, and for community safeguards by international development banks. He has personal experience of many sectors including water resource development, agriculture, oil and gas, housing and planning. He has written guidelines for health agencies, development banks and multinational corporations. He continues to work all across the globe as well as in the UK. He runs training courses for institutions worldwide. He currently heads up a London based consultancy BirleyHIA. Martin?s depth of experience places him in an ideal position to provide an introduction to the rapidly expanding field of health impact assessment, for the benefit of newcomers and experienced practitioners alike.

?Because the physical, social, and intellectual wellbeing of Davidson citizens is fundamental to our community, and since we want our citizens to live in a healthy environment, we are very pleased to be hosting Dr. Martin Birley,? said Hebert.

The talk is free. Light lunch provided. Limited 60 participants. Reserve a seat by contacting Cristina Shaul at 704-940-9602 or cshaul@townofdavidson.org.

Low-power use for mobile devices: 60 GHz radio frequency chip

Mar. 29, 2013 ? As the capacity of handheld devices increases to accommodate a greater number of functions, these devices have more memory, larger display screens, and the ability to play higher definition video files. If the users of mobile devices, including smartphones, tablet PCs, and notebooks, want to share or transfer data on one device with that of another device, a great deal of time and effort are needed.

As a possible method for the speedy transmission of large data, researchers are studying the adoption of gigabits per second (Gbps) wireless communications operating over the 60 gigahertz (GHz) frequency band. Some commercial approaches have been introduced for full-HD video streaming from a fixed source to a display by using the 60 GHz band. But mobile applications have not been developed yet because the 60 GHz radio frequency (RF) circuit consumes hundreds of milliwatts (mW) of DC power.

Professor Chul Soon Park from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and his research team recently developed a low-power version of the 60 GHz radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC). Inside the circuit are an energy-efficient modulator performing amplification as well as modulation and a sensitivity-improved receiver employing a gain boosting demodulator.

The research team said that their RFIC draws as little as 67 mW of power in the 60 GHz frequency band, consuming 31mW to send and 36mW to receive large volumes of data. RFIC is also small enough to be mounted on smartphones or notebooks, requiring only one chip (its width, length, and height are about 1 mm) and one antenna (4x5x1 mm3) for sending and receiving data with an integrated switch.

Professor Park, Director of the Intelligent Radio Engineering Center at KAIST, gave an upbeat assessment of the potential of RFIC for future applications:

"What we have developed is a low-power 60-GHz RF chip with a transmission speed of 10.7 gigabits per second. In tests, we were able to stream uncompressed full-HD videos from a smartphone or notebook to a display without a cable connection. Our chip can be installed on mobile devices or even on cameras so that the devices are virtually connected to other devices and able to exchange large data with each other."

Fed, BoE asset-buying probably not main inflation expectation driver-BIS

By Eva Kuehnen

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Asset-buying by the Bank of England and Federal Reserve to soften the blow of the financial crisis have only had limited impact on inflation expectations, Bank for International Settlements research showed on Sunday.

Since 2008, the U.S. and British central banks have tried to revive lending and support economic growth by spending billions on government and private sector debt.

This has raised some concern that it is destabilizing inflation expectations

But an article by Boris Hofmann and Feng Zhu in the BIS quarterly report, which represents the views of the authors and not necessarily those of the BIS, concluded that the central banks' asset purchase programs "have probably not been the main driver".

"While short- and longer-term inflation expectation measures displayed sizeable upward movements towards pre-crisis levels during the implementation of asset purchase programs, the reaction of inflation swap rates on the days of program announcements suggests that central bank asset purchases were probably not the main driver of these shifts," it said.

The article said it was unclear how other factors, such as fiscal and other monetary policy measures, changing economic conditions or market sentiment affected inflation expectations on the day of the programs' announcements.

For example, the Fed's and the Bank of England's first programs, launched in late 2008 and early 2009 respectively, had initially a negative effect on one-year rates of inflation swaps, financial tools that can be used to hedge inflation risk.

BIS economists said this suggested that market participants at first interpreted these announcements as negative news on the near-term inflation outlook before registering their stimulating effects on the economy.

It also may have reflected peculiar movements in inflation swap markets at times of acute financial and economic stress and in response to announcements of entirely novel policy measures, or it could have reflected the effect of other news on the same day the announcements were made, the economists said.

The program announcements had economically and statistically significant positive effects only on medium- and long-term inflation swap rates in the United States, the analysis suggested.

Madonna calls on Boy Scouts to lift ban on gays

NEW YORK (AP) ? Wearing a replica of one of the organization's uniforms, Madonna called on the Boy Scouts to lift its ban on gays while also calling for a "revolution" to prevent discrimination and abuse of the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community.

Speaking Saturday night at the GLAAD Media Awards, Madonna started off in a mischievous mood. She joked that she wanted to become a part of the Boy Scouts herself, but was turned down, even though she had the qualifications.

"I can build fire. I know how to pitch a tent," said Madonna, sporting a Boy Scouts troop leader hat and a blue shirt and shorts set that included replicas of Boy Scout badges.

"I can rescue kitten. . Most importantly, I know how to scout for boys," she said, before adding, "I think they should change their stupid rules."

The Boy Scouts of America does not permit openly gay people from serving in the organization ? a decision that has come under increasing fire over the years.

Later, she got serious as she talked about the conflicts in the world and of the bullying of young gay, lesbian and transgender people.

"When I think about young kids in America who are being bullied and tortured, who are taking their own lives because they feel alone and judged, outcast and misunderstood, I want to sit down and cry a river of tears," Madonna said.

Noting that she has teenagers herself, she said, "It's an atrocity to me, I don't accept it."

Later she said, "I don't know about you, but I can't take this (expletive) anymore. That is why I want to start a revolution. It's 2013 people. We live in America, land of the free and home of the brave? That's a question, not a statement."

Madonna was on hand to give the Vito Russo Award to CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. She lauded Cooper for standing up for the rights of others.

Also honored was the NBC musical series "Smash," the documentary "How To Survive a Plague," and "The Amazing Race." Brett Ratner was also given the Ally Award ? a turnaround from 2011, when the organization condemned the director for using an anti-gay slur, and he stepped down from a plan to direct the 2012 Academy Awards in the ensuing controversy.

Since then, Ratner has worked with the organization and made a public service announcement to promote equality.

Lahad Datu: Dr M's surprise visit cheers the troops

LAHAD DATU: Hundreds of military and police personnel on duty to flush out foreign militants here had a pleasant surprise when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad turned up to meet them.

Scores of them surged forward to shake the former prime minister's hand when he arrived at the Felda Desa Kencana community hall, where the security personnel were billeted.

Many of them took turns to take photographs with Dr Mahathir, who obliged their requests. The statesman also had tea with them.

Dr Mahathir was accompanied by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, Armed Forces chief Jeneral Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and state Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor. Dr Mahathir also took time out to have to tea with the security personnel.

Speaking to the media later, Dr Mahathir said more equipment was needed to enable the security forces to respond faster to intrusions, especially in Sabah.

?For example in Lahad Datu, there are mangroves and shallow rivers that make it difficult for existing military or police boats to enter,? he added.

Dr Mahathir commended the action of the security forces in dealing with the attacks by the foreign militants.

?This (security offensive) was necessary as they (terrorists) have attacked our country and killed our people,? he added.

He said it was regrettable that some of those in the Southern Philippines had caused trouble to Malaysia although the country did not discriminate against its people of various races and ethnic groups.

?Now, we will not stop until all the terrorists are found or killed. Either way, they will be found,? Dr Mahathir said.

Union raises questions on Geon demise

Updated at 2:35 pm today

An Australian union is raising questions about the sale and winding up of Australasian printing business Geon Group.

The firm went into administration late last month and more than 650 workers in Australia now expect to be retrenched, the ABC reports.

The receiver sold the company's New Zealand assets to rival Blue Star Group, which has retained 76 staff but let 185 go. The firm kept on employees at Geon's Christchurch-based label company Kiwi Labels.

Blue Star has also bought Geon's operations in New South Wales and Victoria, and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says it is refusing to offer employment to existing staff.

The impasse has prompted Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten to intervene to guarantee Geon staff early access to their entitlements.

AMWU spokeswoman Lorraine Cassin said discussions are ongoing about selling Geon's operations in Tasmania and Western Australia, but the union is upset by what has unfolded at the firm's NSW and Victorian divisions.

Ms Cassin said the union had been informed through the receivers that Blue Star was going to make substantial job offers to those employees. However the union was advised by the company on Thursday that it was not going to offer any employment due to the enterprise agreement in place.

Enterprise agreements in Australian firms set out the employment conditions between staff and an employer.

Ms Cassin said the union was trying to find out what led to the viable company winding up, leaving workers virtually unemployed, and would call on the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) to look at competition issues.

Geon Group employed 678 workers in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and Western Australia.

Administrators McGrathNicol and the company had not immediately commented to the ABC.

Mitt Romney apologizes for not being elected president

At a gathering for conservatives to plot their future, there was a stark reminder of the past on Friday as failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney made his first public speech since election night.

?I am sorry that I won?t be your president,? Romney told the audience of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), ?but I will be your co-worker and I will stand shoulder to shoulder beside you.?

Since he accepted defeat to US President Barack Obama in the early hours of the morning on Nov. 7 last year in Boston, Romney has largely vanished from view. He is occasionally spotted on the ski slopes with his family, pumping gas or shopping at Costco.

He and his wife Ann have retired to La Jolla, California, where the Romney family keeps a home, although they did give an interview to Fox News last month.

The former Massachusetts governor was the first losing presidential candidate in nearly 25 years not to be in Washington on Inauguration Day.

Looking tanned since his time off the campaign trail, Romney delivered what sounded very much like his campaign speech.

He told vignettes about the Americans he met as he traveled across the country on the way to his eventual defeat.

Romney said he realized the awkwardness of his position.

?As someone who just lost the last election, I?m probably not the best person to chart the course for the next election,? he said.

Romney has never had a simple relationship with the conservative base, which always suspected he was too moderate on healthcare, abortion and other issues.

In past years, Romney won the conference?s straw poll for preferred presidential candidate, but audiences like CPAC are often filled with the sort of Republicans who were most suspicious of his conservative credentials.

Appearing at the same event last year, Romney declared himself to be ?severely conservative.?

That strained formulation did not warm conservatives? hearts and led to ridicule from some in the media.

For many gathered at a hotel here south of Washington, the lesson from Romney?s loss is a simple one: Republicans nominated a candidate who was not conservative enough.

On Thursday, Texas Governor Rick Perry, once Romney?s rival in the presidential primary, told the crowd: ?The popular media narrative is that this country has shifted away from conservative ideas, as evidence by the last two presidential elections. That?s what they think, that?s what they say. That might be true if Republicans had actually nominated conservative candidates in 2008 and 2012.?

?The fact is the base didn?t come out for him,? said Bob Vander Plaats, the president of the Family Leader and a prominent social conservative in the early-voting state of Iowa. ?No matter how much we did to push our base towards him that was a hard rope to push.?

Romney was received warmly by the audience and the former candidate thanked them for their ?earnest support.?

He did have one warning for conservatives.

?We particularly need to hear from the governors of the blue and purple states,? he said, advising conservatives not to give up on the states where he lost to Obama.

Romney mentioned two governors ? New Jersey?s Chris Christie and Virginia?s Bob McDonnell ? who were not invited to participate in the influential conference.

Both governors have been criticized for taking positions that part with Republican orthodoxy.

Florida rallies to reach SEC Tournament final

Published: Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 3:03 p.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 8:10 p.m.

Down 10 early in the second half Saturday, the teetering Gators appeared headed for a second straight semifinal exit in the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

But Florida managed to get a few stops. And slumping senior guard Kenny Boynton finally heated up.

Boynton scored all of his team-high 16 points in the second half, carrying the No. 13 Gators to a 61-51 win over Alabama in the SEC Tournament semifinals. The win advanced Florida to the tourney final for the sixth time in 17 seasons under coach Billy Donovan.

Donovan was proud of the resiliency the Gators showed in the second-half comeback.

?There is nothing easy about getting here, and as a group or as individuals, you have to accept, embrace and really be driven by that challenge,? Donovan said.

The Gators (26-6) will try for their first SEC Tournament title since 2007 against Ole Miss (25-8), which beat Vanderbilt 64-52 in the second semifinal game.

?To have a chance to play for another championship, it feels great,? said Florida junior center Patric Young, who also stepped up with 13 points and nine rebounds. ?We know it's going to be a 40-minute game, and we're going to do what it takes to bring that trophy home.?

Florida also could join the 2007 Gators as the second team in school history to win both the SEC regular-season championship and SEC Tournament championship.

Playing for a championship didn't look promising when Trevor Releford made a pair of free throws to put Alabama (21-12) up 37-27 with 16:05 left. But Florida showed the same toughness it showed in rallying from down eight points to beat Alabama on March 2 in Gainesville.

Florida responded with a 15-0 run, which began with a pair of free throws from Will Yeguete and continued with 11 straight points from Boynton. For the much maligned former McDonald's All-American, it was a big breakout. Boynton's first 3-pointer in two SEC Tournament games cut Alabama's lead to 37-36 with 13:45 left, and he followed it up with a driving layup in transition with 13:07 left to give the Gators a 38-37 lead.

Back-to-back baskets from Boynton and Young extended UF's lead to 42-37 with 11:14 left. From there, Florida made all the effort plays to close out the game. The Gators out-rebounded Alabama 18-12 in the second half, which included big putback baskets from Young and Casey Prather. Florida outscored Alabama 12-8 in second-chance points.

?We didn't want to go into the locker room knowing we played that hard only to come away with a loss,? said Florida junior point guard Scottie Wilbekin, who finished with four points, four assists and three steals. ?We had felt that before in close games, and it hurts. We don't want to go through that again.?

Young was particularly active on the boards. His nine rebounds were the most since grabbing 11 rebounds against Kentucky on Feb. 12

?I was just really locked in,? Young said. ?Just trying to really work hard, get good positioning. I felt like I could have even had a few more.?

In a battle between the SEC's top two defenses, Florida struggled to score early. The Gators tried to establish Young inside, but he missed his first two shot attempts from close range. Yeguete and Erik Murphy also failed to convert on shots in and around the basket. Florida also missed its first six 3-point attempts and finished the first half 1 of 8 from beyond the arc.

?I thought our team got deflated in the first half,? Donovan said. ?And not that they were frustrated with each other, frustrated with missing layups. Patric Young misses a couple of layups, I can see it in his face. He feels like he's letting the entire world down. But you've got to stay with the struggle.?

Alabama, meanwhile, rode the inside-out combination of Nick Jacobs and Trevor Lacey to a 28-25 halftime lead. Jacobs scored nine of his 11 points in the first half, while Lacey's eight first-half points included a couple of deep 3-pointers with a hand in his face. Alabama finished the first half shooting 55 percent from the floor (11 of 20) and 60 percent from 3-point range (3 of 5).

?I kinda thought maybe they had a box of Lucky Charms behind the bench or something,? Young said. ?They were hitting so many crazy shots. But we knew as long as we worked hard on the defensive end it would start to level out.?

To start the second half, Florida fell behind 37-27. But as momentum started to shift, Alabama players admitted they felt the same sinking feeling they did in letting an eight-point lead slip away in Gainesville. The loss dropped Alabama coach Anthony Grant to 0-6 against his mentor. Grant worked 12 seasons as an assistant under Donovan at Marshall and Florida.

?Me and Andrew (Steele), we were talking about it on the bench,? Lacey said. ?When we went up 10, we were talking about we need to keep what we were doing, keep it on them, keep attacking them and just try to make plays.?

But it was the Gators who made the plays in crunch time.

?Our guys tried to fight everywhere,? Donovan said.

Notes: Florida will be going for its fourth SEC Tournament title in school history. The Gators have won previous SEC Tournaments in 2005, 2006, 2007. ? The Gators rank first in the SEC and third in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 53.3 points per game. The Gators have held 12 opponents under 50 points and 23 opponents under 60 points. ? Offensively, Florida senior guard Kenny Boynton broke out of a recent slump with a team-high 16 points against Alabama. Over the past decade, director Bala's style of filmmaking has become popular for a lot of reasons. Not only has his work received critical acclaim numerous times, but actors who have featured in them have also produced the performance of their lifetime. So, when his latest flick 'Paradesi' came out, all of us had a good idea about what to expect from the man.

The basic rules of filmmaking do not exist in the world of Bala. He does not go out of his way to fit his film into anybody's requirements. The ideologies are clear and there is almost no commercialism and he is bullish about doing exactly what he wants and nothing else.

The result is prominent in 'Paradesi', perhaps more than any other film of his. This is pure unadulterated cinema and the screenplay and the plot rank high above everything else.

The director's methods have been questioned in recent times, especially after the release of the final teaser before the film. But, you can never question his dedication to the art. Right from the adapted screenplay to the characters in the film, his effort is seen everywhere in 'Paradesi'.

Worthy of more national awards? It will certainly make do for some stiff competition.

Inspired from a book titled Red Tea, it tells the story of enslaved plantation workers who experience atrocities in pre-Independence India. That's a typical setting for somebody like Bala, who is known for his no-frills method of filming. There's nothing overly obscene to make the film unwatchable, but you better have a heart for tragedy, for there's plenty of it. The fact everything he portrays a true story makes the reality look harsh and is also an attribute of his success.

After Vikram and Suriya, it seems that Adharvaa is next in line to receive Bala's Midas touch. He is nothing short of spectacular and is one of the standing points of the film. With all the drilling in place, his character is not likely to deserve a better performance. The hardships the man has gone through are seen in every scene. If you appreciate those sorts of things, you will applaud heartily for him just playing his character.

Vedhika and Dhansika, whom you would have never seen this way before, also do justice to their roles. They produce memorable performances even though they don't necessarily take too much screen time.

With them, about 200 junior artists have put in almost equal effort, and have lifted the production value of the project. Rasa's grandmother, the dastardly Indian lord and the doctor deserve special mention, for bringing their characters to life. When you connect all the dots, the production value of Paradesi is staggering and makes for a great case study of how you can create a world on screen with limited resources.

The technical aspect of the film is just as impressive. More than anything else, Cheziyan's cinematography, the sepia like color tone maintained throughout the film contributes more to the emotion than anything else. The dialogues come next, and are pitch perfect for the timeline and the nature of the characters. And of course, with brilliant actors to deliver them, you never feel the burden of a period screenplay weighing down the film.

GV Prakash's music, which didn't seem to make ends meet at first glance, makes sense when it joins hands with the film. 'Sengaade' pictures the tiring endurance of a long journey like never before 'Avatha Paiyya' is bittersweet and kindles romances without any help. For the serious film buffs though, the background scores will be the talking point.

A majority of the film has no plot holes, and proceeds well without any intervention. The first sad mistake comes in the song 'Thannai Thaane' which is absolutely outrageous and pathetic for a film like this. It is glaring and is most indifferent from everything else in the film, and could have been skipped entirely. It ruins the mood and looks nothing like something from Bala.

But for most it's part, 'Paradesi' is a class in great filmmaking. It tells you how a bare-bones team and a lot of groundwork can make up for a great package. It has reintroduced Adharvaa as an exquisite artist and also giving a push in the back for Vedhika and Dhansika. When seen on screen, you see all the pieces add up to a form a big picture.

It is tragic, but it also makes you laugh on several occasions, and it does not need a dedicated comedian and a lead actor showing off to pull it off. It's strengths are also it's weaknesses, for there will be main who write it down because it just doesn't give them entertainment. But Paradesi is not after those people, it's not after commercial success, it does what it should be doing, outright and flat like its director.

New research discovers the emergence of Twitter 'tribes'

Mar. 14, 2013 ? A project led by scientists from Royal Holloway University in collaboration with Princeton University, has found evidence of how people form into tribe-like communities on social network sites such as Twitter.

In a paper published in EPJ Data Science, they found that these communities have a common character, occupation or interest and have developed their own distinctive languages.

"This means that by looking at the language someone uses, it is possible to predict which community he or she is likely to belong to, with up to 80% accuracy," said Dr John Bryden from the School of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway. "We searched for unusual words that are used a lot by one community, but relatively infrequently by the others. For example, one community often mentioned Justin Bieber, while another talked about President Obama."

Professor Vincent Jansen from Royal Holloway added: "Interestingly, just as people have varying regional accents, we also found that communities would misspell words in different ways. The Justin Bieber fans have a habit of ending words in 'ee', as in 'pleasee', while school teachers tend to use long words."

The team produced a map of the communities showing how they have vocations, politics, ethnicities and hobbies in common. In order to do this, they focused on the sending of publicly available messages via Twitter, which meant that they could record conversations between two or many participants.

To group these users into communities, they turned to cutting-edge algorithms from physics and network science. The algorithms worked by looking for individuals that tend to send messages to other members of the same community.

Dr Bryden then suggested analyzing the language use of these discovered communities.

Dr Sebastian Funk from Princeton University said: "When we started to apply John's ideas, surprising groups started to emerge that we weren't expecting. One 'anipals' group was interested in hosting parties to raise funds for animal welfare, while another was a fascinating growing community interested in the concept of gratitude."

Breakthrough research shows chemical reaction in real time

Mar. 14, 2013 ? The ultrafast, ultrabright X-ray pulses of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) have enabled unprecedented views of a catalyst in action, an important step in the effort to develop cleaner and more efficient energy sources.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory used LCLS, together with computerized simulations, to reveal surprising details of a short-lived early state in a chemical reaction occurring at the surface of a catalyst sample. The study offers important clues about how catalysts work and launches a new era in probing surface chemistry as it happens.

"To study a reaction like this in real time is a chemist's dream," said Anders Nilsson, deputy director for the Stanford and SLAC SUNCAT Center for Interface Science and Catalysis and a leading author in the research, published Mar. 15 in Science. "We are really jumping into the unknown."

Catalysts, which can speed up chemical reactions and make them more efficient and effective, are essential to most industrial processes and to the production of many chemicals. Catalytic converters in cars for example, reduce emissions by converting exhaust to less toxic compounds. Understanding how catalysts work, at ultrafast time scales and with molecular precision, is essential to producing new, lower-cost synthetic fuels and alternative energy sources that reduce pollution, Nilsson said.

In the LCLS experiment, researchers looked at a simple reaction in a crystal composed of ruthenium, a catalyst that has been extensively studied, in reaction with carbon monoxide gas. The scientists zapped the crystal's surface with a conventional laser, which caused carbon monoxide molecules to begin to break away. They then probed this state of the reaction using X-ray laser pulses, and observed that the molecules were temporarily trapped in a near-gas state and still interacting with the catalyst.

"We never expected to see this state," Nilsson said. "It was a surprise."

Not only was the experiment the first to confirm the details of this early stage of the reaction, it also found an unexpectedly high share of molecules trapped in this state for far longer than what was anticipated, raising new questions about the atomic-scale interplay of chemicals that will be explored in future research.

Some of the early stages of a chemical reaction are so rapid that they could not be observed until the creation of free-electron lasers such as LCLS, said Jens N?rskov, director for SUNCAT. Future experiments at LCLS will examine more complex reactions and materials, Nilsson said. "There is potential to probe a number of catalytic-relevant processes -- you can imagine there are tons of things we could do from here."

Important preliminary research was conducted at SLAC's Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), and this direct coupling of research at SLAC's synchrotron and X-ray laser proved essential, said Hirohito Ogasawara, a staff scientist at SSRL.

Petting Zoo for iPhone and iPad review

Petting Zoo for iPhone and iPad review

Petting Zoo by Christoph Niemann is a fun little interactive picture book for iPhone and iPad. Each page of the book features hand-drawn animations that interact with your touch.

The first page begins with a pencil drawing a hat that has a rabbit come out of it. Though you can't tell visually, the rabbit is pinned by its ears and feet, so when you swipe up, down, left, and right, the rabbit's body will stretch over in the respective direction Tapping him once will stretch him backwards and then bounce forward. The animations are great, especially considering they were hand-drawn.

When you advance to the next page, the rabbit morphs into a dog house and a long, skinny dachshund walks out of it. Using gestures, you can tie him in a knot and even make him breakdance.

As you turn the pages, the drawings morph from one zoo animal to another. There are 21 different animals and all of them respond to your touch.

The good

  • Thousands of frames of hand-drawn animation
  • Playful, musical sounds for each animal
  • Fun for all ages, from infants to adults

The bad

  • No complaints

The bottom line

Petting Zoo is an awesome kids book that even adults will enjoy. My two-year-old daughter thinks it's hilariously fun.

What ovarian cancer can teach us about medicine, as a whole ...

The New York Times has a story on problems with the treatment of ovarian cancer that holds lessons for many aspects of modern medicine. The big issue here: Local doctors, even local specialists, might not have the information necessary to properly treat patients who come in with problems those doctors don't have a lot of experience with. And those doctors don't always refer patients to people with more expertise. In a world with constantly changing information, how do you get that information to the people patients are most in contact with? In a world with more and more evidence available, how do you change traditions in the medical community that apply treatments based on "what my teachers did" and "what I've always done"? Big questions here, not a lot of answers.

Jane Buckingham: Four Seconds of Fame

Here's the story of how over two weeks, a "nobody" went from 10 to 100 to 10,000 followers on Instagram, having two fan pages, and a social media stalker.

And I'm not proud to admit that the story is about my nine-year-old daughter.

Rightly or wrongly, I've subscribed to the notion that when it comes to the wild world of the Internet and social media, I want my kids to experience, and make their mistakes when they are young -- and their transgressions relatively small. As someone whose business has been in watching trends for over 20 years, I've observed with a combination of a trained sociologist and the wariness of a young parent the explosion of a new digital world. I have eased sighs of relief as my children tried out Kik, Snap Chat, Moshi Monsters and other "kid" based apps and sites to no issue under my watchful eye.

But even as a predictor of the future, I wasn't ready for the speed at which Instagram would catch fire, and before one could apply a photo filter, over one million tweens joined the service in July 2012 alone (according to Nielsen). So when my kids wanted to join, I allowed them, carefully outlining the types of photos they should post, never to tag friends who weren't allowed on, and to let me know of anything untoward or inappropriate on there. Everything was fine.

And then my daughter got "famous."

Well, lets be clear, not famous, just... Internet famous. My daughter is a very good dancer, extremely flexible and adorable. And she is one of a tremendous number of tweens who follow the show Dance Moms as if it were a marathon One Direction concert. If you're not familiar with the fervor with which this show is received, you should check out any one of its' talented tween stars Instagrams. Each has 300,0000 to over 500,000 followers and countless fan sites. Because of my business, I wound up meeting and working with some the cast. They couldn't have been sweeter to my daughter, and they became friends. And as many group of friends today do, the girls posted photos with my daughter. Thus, the frenzy began. Rumors started swirling whether my daughter was the newest cast member? Was related to the girls? Or why she was suddenly all over their feeds. No matter how much my daughter, her brother, or the girls themselves denied it, the interest in Lilia grew. Over night she had over 2,000 new followers. By the end of the week, she had two fan pages. (FAN PAGES??!!!) and even the video I had posted on YouTube for her grandmother in London to see was getting "favorited."

By the second week, she had endless requests to release her (nonexistent) Kik, girls begging to be her best friend, and countless pleas for replies. And that weekend, she received a call and texts from a "fan" who increasingly became frustrated that Lilia would not respond, and threatened to release her number (How she even got it remains a mystery).

So a girl, who did nothing, was not on a show, was not in the public eye, and was just your normal kid suddenly had fans and a stalker?

Today, tweens, and frankly all of us, are looking for cues of what to pay attention to . We are so eager to find the next trend, and be the first to discover it that we will jump on anything with heat, only to discover that not only does the emperor have no clothes, but he has no followers. Tweens today have to navigate not only the struggles of getting older, but learning to discern fact from fiction in a world that few of us can truly decipher.

Another friend told me that her daughter felt her friendships had become threatened, and competitive. If two girls were off together and posting photos, two more of the group would feel the need to show that they were having a better time. Besties and BFFL's were used like currency, and birthdays became an occasion to see who could post a longer "friendship love letter" and if the use of each emoticons cost money, we'd all be bankrupt by now.

Just as I was ready to shut it all down, my daughter decided to pull herself off. Though, as you can't actually delete an Instagram account, she simply decided to stop posting. I can do nothing about her fan pages, who to this day remain loyal and scour the internet for photos I didn't even know existed on line.

We suggested that she could create a new account, keep it private, and accept only her close friend. But she decided not to. As she said, "I think I'm too addicted to it, I don't need it or want it." There was no better lesson we could have taught her, or ourselves.

Homebuyers Searching for Real Estate Deals in Hurricane Sandy ...

Hurricane Sandy flooded homes along the Eastern Seaboard.

It sounds like the premise for a new reality TV series: "Hurricane House" -- people scouring waterside communities looking to buy homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy at a deep discount. While there are bargains out there, ranging from 10 percent off pre-storm prices for upscale homes on New York's Long Island and the Jersey Shore to as much as 60 percent off modest bungalows on Staten Island and Queens, it's still very much a game of buyer beware.

Not only are buyers on the hook for repairs and in some cases total rebuilds, they're also wading into a host of potentially expensive uncertainties about new flood maps and future insurance rates, zoning changes and updated building codes. "It's totally changed the way I sell real estate," said Lawrence Greenberg, a sales associate with Van Skiver Realtors, whose own Mantoloking, N.J., office was wrecked in the storm.

Prior to Sandy, prospective buyers rarely mentioned issues such as flood maps and building elevations until the matter of flood insurance came up -- often at closing. "Now, everybody asks the question of elevation," Greenberg said. Even if potential buyers plan to tear down and build new, they ask about the pending changes in flood maps proposed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, because flood insurance rates will depend upon the new zones.

There is no sign of a mass exodus from shoreline communities. The number of for-sale listings in January in the 380 Zip codes hit by the storm was about 2 percent below the same time last year, according to online real estate information company Zillow. That indicates that most homeowners are rebuilding, or have not yet decided how to proceed. But real estate agents in New York and New Jersey say the majority of homes for sale in these areas have some damage from the Oct. 29 storm, and it appears to them that a rising number are being put on the market as the spring home-buying season approaches.

New listings range from destroyed oceanfront properties being sold for the land, to flooded bayside homes untouched since the storm that must be gutted. Even the few undamaged homes in affected neighborhoods are listing at prices about 10 percent lower than they would have been pre-storm. Some sellers are overwhelmed by the daunting prospect of restoring a damaged home. Some are older homeowners who had stayed in the houses where they raised their families, but now are relocating. Some didn't have flood insurance.

"They either don't have the funds or don't have the energy to go through the renovating and rebuilding process," said Jeff Childers, a broker with Childers Sotheby's International Realty in Normandy Beach, N.J.

Lisa Jackson, broker and owner of Rockaway Properties in the Belle Harbor section of Queens, N.Y., said a number of her new listings are homes owned by senior citizens. One 85-year-old client was living alone in her 1940s-era six-bedroom, six-bath brick home right on the beach. The house was hammered by Sandy, and must be at least partially demolished, but will still command a hefty price. "Everything on the water is big money," Jackson said. But the $3 million listing price is nevertheless a huge discount from the roughly $4.25 million it would have commanded before the storm.
