Timbuktu manuscripts mostly safe, university says

A limited number of manuscripts in Timbuktu in Mali were damaged or stolen by Islamist extremists last week before they fled the fabled desert city, a South African university said Wednesday.

People in the north Malian city who have knowledge of the documents reported that there was no malicious destruction of any library or collection, said the University of Cape Town, which helped fund a state-of-the-art library to house manuscripts.

"The custodians of the libraries worked quietly throughout the rebel occupation of Timbuktu to ensure the safety of their materials," said the university. Islamist rebels have been in control of Timbuktu for nearly 10 months.

The university said that a report from Britain's Sky News that 25,000 manuscripts had been burned was false. Other news reports quoted the city mayor, who wasn't in the city, saying manuscripts had been destroyed, the university said.

With its Islamic treasures and centuries-old mud-walled buildings including an iconic mosque, Timbuktu is a U.N.-designated World Heritage Site.

Most of the manuscripts, which are as many as 900 years old, were gathered between the 1980s and 2000 from all over Mali for the Ahmad Baba Institute for Higher Learning and Islamic Research, which moved into its new home in 2009.

Media reports said that the Ahmad Baba Institute had been ransacked by the militants. But the university said a senior researcher at the institute, Mohamed Diagayete, said the majority of the manuscripts were stored in an older building elsewhere in the city.

The manuscripts cover subjects from science, astrology and medicine to history, theology, grammar and geography. They date back to the late 12th century, the start of a 300-year golden age for Timbuktu as a spiritual and intellectual capital for the propagation of Islam.

Islamist extremists decimated tourism in 2011 when three Europeans were taken hostage from a Timbuktu restaurant in November that year. In April 2012, Tuareg nationalist rebels seized control of Timbuktu from government troops. A day later Islamist insurgents moved into the city. They banned music, insisted women cover themselves and began carrying out public executions.

On Tuesday, Timbuktu was in control of French and Malian troops, including some 250 French paratroopers dropped from the sky. The extremists melted into the desert without firing a shot. Townspeople were jubilant at the city's liberation from intolerant Islamist extremists.

"The protection of the cultural and intellectual heritage of this region needs to be enhanced and promoted," the university said. "The abandonment of the security of Timbuktu nine months ago, the flight of archivists and researchers, and the closure of libraries should not be repeated."

Consulting Jobs Require You to Name Microsoft's Worst Product, Coffin Math

Insight

By Beecher Tuttle, 30 Jan 2013

How many people will buy coffins in a country with five million people? What?s Microsoft?s worst product? These are just a couple of the questions M.B.A. graduates and prospective interns from New York University?s Leonard N. Stern School of Business were asked by consulting companies in recent months.? If you can answer them and the others below, you may have a shot at a job with the likes of an IBM, Oracle or Bain.

  • A coffin company in a little country called Moldavia makes budget-priced, machine-made coffins and hand-made, high-end coffins. The company?s craftsmen who make the hand-made coffins are slowly retiring and new people are harder to find. The company is thinking about revamping their factories to install machinery to manufacture high-end coffins. What issues would they have to think about to make this decision? How could we estimate the market size for coffins in Moldavia if there are 5 million residents, people only live to age 75 and coffins are sold at $1,000 each (you have to make your own assumptions)
  • How profitable would it be to serve a cup of coffee to a tourist on Alcatraz?
  • Should you get an offer from multiple consulting firms how will you decide which firm?
  • A private equity firm is looking to acquire a company that installs and operates independent banking machines/ATMs. It is looking to get a 25% return over the next five years. What factors should it be looking at when considering the acquisition?
  • How would you prepare a proposal for a client who is manufacturing a special cable which can be used in power lines and telephone lines? The client wants to evaluate the future of this product.
  • You?ve been hired by a PE firm to evaluate buying a dormant cell phone network in a city of 5 million people for $50 million. They plan on offering a $30 a month plan that offers free calls anywhere in the metro area but nowhere else. Market penetrations of cell phones is 40%, max is 60%. There are 3 players in the market. The average customer life is 3 years. Acquisition cost is $500 per customer, 20% of non-cell phone users would be interested in the plan, 10% of users would switch. Should they do it?
  • Tell me about a poorly marketed product. What do you think was the rationale behind this marketing?
  • Tell me a Microsoft product that you hate? How would you fix it?
  • The new CEO at Apple is asking you for help on continuing Steve Jobs? legacy through Apple?s products and services. Where do you begin?
  • You have a company that is the number one producer of baby nutritional products in Europe. You would like to launch your product in the U.S. What are the issues around launching that product? Given these issues, would you recommend launching the product?

Flier protections a big part of LaHood?s DOT legacy

10 hrs.

How often do you think about Ray LaHood when you fly? For most fliers, the answer is probably, "never"???or "Ray La-Who?"

But when a storm keeps a? plane grounded on the tarmac, an airline loses luggage or fees complicate airfare shopping, it's the rules put in place under the LaHood-led Department of Transportation?that help keep travelers sane.

Secretary?LaHood announced Tuesday?he will leave his post ? a move that made some passenger rights advocates wistful.

?There?s actually no doubt about it, he was by far the most passenger-friendly and consumer-friendly Secretary of Transportation that we?ve ever had,? said Charlie Leocha, director of the Consumer Travel Alliance.

?He had a whole series of consumer-friendly rule makings that really changed the landscape of flying for the public.?

LaHood will perhaps be most remembered for implementing the tarmac delay rule, which took effect in the spring of 2010 and threatened airlines with huge fines if they allowed a flight to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours?without giving passengers the option of deplaning.?The rule aims to cut down on nightmare scenarios involving passengers stuck inside a grounded plane, with little food or water and with malfunctioning lavatories.

It appears to be working. There were 86 tarmac delays of three hours or more in 2011, the last full year for which DOT statistics are available, or about one-tenth of such incidents reported in 2009.

Other passenger protections passed during LaHood?s tenure include requiring airlines to disclose all fees on their websites and refund bag fees if they lose the luggage. DOT also doubled the amount of compensation passengers are eligible for if they are involuntarily bumped from an oversold flight.

Some of those regulations are more important than the tarmac delay rule because they affect many more travelers on a daily basis, Leocha said.

At the same time, LaHood?s DOT showed the regulations finally have teeth by levying hefty fines against airlines that break the rules.

?He has been very active in instituting, and following up and enforcing,? Leocha told NBC News, adding he would give the departing secretary a grade of ?A-plus-plus-plus.?

LaHood also received warm praise from the National Association of Railroad Passengers, which called him an energetic advocate for the improvement and expansion of America?s passenger rail network.

Other travel advocates were somewhat more critical.

Paul Hudson, president of FlyersRights.org, gave LaHood a grade of B-minus.

?He certainly presided over an improvement in passenger rights. In the last year, though, he seems to have rested on the momentum that was there previously,? Hudson said.

Hudson?s group presented the DOT with 19 recommendations last summer, he noted, including establishing an airline passenger emergency hotline and providing travelers with compensation for excessive flight delays. But the government committee that examined the proposed reforms ignored them, Hudson said.

He hopes that whoever replaces LaHood will take a much more serious look at the recommendations.

Meanwhile, Airlines for America (A4A)???which represents some of the country?s biggest carriers ? praised LaHood?s commitment to safety. The group hasn?t always seen eye to eye with the secretary, warning at one point that the tarmac delay rule would lead to more canceled flights, greater passenger inconvenience and would be inconsistent with the goal of completing as many flights as possible.

LaHood will leave his post once a successor is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. A4A will focus on his successor, who is not immediately clear.

?We look forward to working with the next DOT leader on ways to build on the safety and efficiency of the airlines, while ensuring they are able to compete globally,? A4A spokesman Vaughn Jennings said?in a statement to NBC News.

So what?s next? Leocha said he?s not worried that the momentum will stop when LaHood departs. The Consumer Travel Alliance plans to keep up the pressure on the new secretary of transportation, he added.

?The culture of taking care of consumers and passengers is really ingrained at the DOT and it would take something really dramatic to have that change," Leocha said. "I just don?t see that happening.?

Climate change projected to alter Indiana bat maternity range

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Research by U.S. Forest Service scientists forecasts profound changes over the next 50 years in the summer range of the endangered Indiana bat. In an article published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, Forest Service Southern Research Station researchers Susan Loeb and Eric Winters discuss the findings of one of the first studies designed to forecast the responses of a temperate zone bat species to climate change.

The researchers modeled the current maternity distribution of Indiana bats and then modeled future distributions based on four different climate change scenarios. "We found that due to projected changes in temperature, the most suitable summer range for Indiana bats would decline and become concentrated in the northeastern United States and the Appalachian Mountains," says SRS research ecologist Loeb. "The western part of the range (Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio) -- currently considered the heart of Indiana bat maternity range -- would become unsuitable under most climates that we modeled. This has important implications for managers in the Northeast and the Appalachian Mountains as these areas will most likely serve as climatic refuges for these animals when other parts of the range become too warm."

In general, bat species in temperate zones such as Indiana bats may be more sensitive than many other groups of mammals to climate change because their reproductive cycles, hibernation patterns, and migration are closely tied to temperature. Indiana bat populations were in decline for decades due to multiple factors, including the destruction of winter hibernation sites and loss of summer maternity habitat.

Due to conservation efforts, researchers saw an increase in Indiana bat populations in 2000 to 2005, but with the onset of white-nose syndrome populations are declining again, with the number of Indiana bats reported hibernating in the northeastern United States down by 72 percent in 2011. The study predicts even more declines due to temperature rises from climate change, with much of the western portion of the current range forecast to be unsuitable for maternity habitat by 2060.

"Our model suggests that once average summer (May through August) maximum temperatures reach 27.4?C (81.3?F), the climatic suitability of the area for Indiana bat maternity colonies declines," says Loeb. "Once they reach 29.9?C (85.8?F), the area is forecast to become completely unsuitable. Initially, Indiana bat maternity colonies may respond to warming temperatures by choosing roosts that have more shade than the roosts that they currently use. Eventually, it is likely that they will have to find more suitable climates."

The models the researchers produced provide resource managers guidance on areas that are likely to contain maternity colonies now and in the future, depending on the availability of suitable habitat in those areas. "Managers in the western parts of the range should be aware of the potential changes in summer distributions due to climate change and not assume that declines are due to habitat loss or degradation," says Loeb. "Management actions that foster high reproductive success and survival will be critical for the conservation and recovery of the species."

(AP) ? What does it mean to be British? Monarchs, Margaret Thatcher and Monty Python are all important parts of the nation's heritage, according to a new guide for immigrants introduced Monday.

The government is revising the "Life in the U.K." handbook and test taken by those seeking to become British citizens or settle here permanently.

While the previous version ? created under the former Labour government ? included some practical questions about daily life, the emphasis is now firmly on British history and culture. There are questions on sports, music and historical figures from William Shakespeare to Winston Churchill.

The Conservative-led government says the new handbook also features "an exploration of Britons' unique sense of humor and satire," alongside an explanation of aspects of cultural life including the national love of gardening, the novels of Jane Austen and the musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Immigration Minister Mark Harper said the book "focuses on values and principles at the heart of being British." But Don Flynn, director of the Migrants' Rights Network, likened it to a private school entry exam, "which requires complete identification with elite views of British history and culture."

The handbook asks migrants to learn a potted history of Britain from the Stone Age to the present day. Among its facts:

?Britain has been an island nation for some 10,000 years, since the last ice age ended and left a watery English Channel between England and the European mainland.

?Despite its name, the Hundred Years War against France lasted 116 years.

?King Henry VIII "was most famous for breaking away from the Church of Rome and marrying six times."

?No monarch has set foot in the House of Commons since 1642, when Charles I tried unsuccessfully to arrest five lawmakers. After a civil war, he was beheaded.

?Britain's first coffee house was the Hindoostane Coffee House in London, opened by Bengal-born Sake Dean Mahomet in 1810.

?The greatest Briton of all time, according to a 2002 public vote, was Churchill, the prime minister who led the country to victory in World War II.

?"Two well-known pop music groups" of the 1960s were The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

?British inventions of the 20th century include television, radar, the cash-dispensing bank machine and the World Wide Web.

Sandy aid bill heads to Obama's desk

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three months after Superstorm Sandy ravaged coastal areas in much of the Northeast, Congress on Monday sent a $50.5 billion emergency relief measure for storm victims to President Barack Obama for his signature.

"I commend Congress for giving families and businesses the help they deserve, and I will sign this bill into law as soon as it hits my desk," Obama said in a statement late Monday.

Despite opposition from conservatives concerned about adding billions of dollars more to the nation's debt, the Senate cleared the long-delayed bill, 62-36, after House Republicans had stripped it earlier this month of spending unrelated to disasters. All 36 votes against the bill were from Republican senators.

"This is a huge relief," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., noting the vote came 91 days after Sandy struck.

The House passed the bill two weeks ago. Lawmakers say the money is urgently needed to start rebuilding homes, businesses, public transportation facilities and other infrastructure damaged by the Oct. 29 storm, one of the worst to strike the Northeast.

Sandy roared up the East Coast and is blamed for more than 130 deaths and tens of billions of dollars in property damage, particularly in New York and New Jersey. The measure is aimed primarily at helping residents and businesses as well as state and local governments rebuild.

The biggest chunk of money is $16 billion for Housing and Urban Development Department community development block grants. Of that, about $12.1 billion will be shared among Sandy victims as well as those from other federally declared disasters in 2011-2013. The remaining $3.9 billion is solely for Sandy-related projects.

More than $11 billion will go to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief aid fund for providing shelter, restoring power and other storm-interrupted utility services and meeting other immediate needs arising from Sandy and other disasters. Another $10 billion is devoted to repairing New York and New Jersey transit systems and making them more resistant to future storms.

Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., said Republicans weren't seeking "to undermine" help for Sandy victims but instead were trying to make sure that the money was actually being spent on emergency needs.

"We're simply trying to say we need some standards," Coats said.

Earlier in January, Congress approved and Obama signed a $9.7 billion bill to replenish the National Flood Insurance Program, which has received well over 100,000 flood insurance claims related to Sandy. Added to the new, $50.5 billion package, the total is roughly in line with the $60.4 billion that Obama requested in December.

The aid package was greased for passage before the last Congress adjourned and the new one came in on Jan. 3. But Speaker John Boehner refused to bring it to the floor after two-thirds of House Republicans voted against a "fiscal cliff" deficit-reduction deal raising taxes on couples making more than $450,000 a year while deferring some $24 billion in spending cuts to defense and domestic programs.

The ruckus after the Senate had passed an earlier $60.4 billion Sandy relief package by a nearly 2-to-1 margin on Dec. 28 exposed deep political divisions within Republican ranks. "There's only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims, the House majority and their speaker, John Boehner," Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie fumed at the time.

Top House Republicans responded by bringing new Sandy aid legislation to the floor under ground rules designed to win over as many Republicans as possible while retaining support from Democrats eager to approve as much in disaster aid as possible.

GOP leaders cut spending in the Senate bill unrelated to disasters. One would have transferred $1 billion for training Iraqi policemen to instead be used to bolster security at U.S. diplomatic missions. The shift in money followed a Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

Also deleted were $188 million for an Amtrak expansion project that included new, long-planned tunnels from New Jersey to Penn Station in Manhattan, and another $150 million for fisheries disasters that states such as Alaska and Mississippi could have shared.

After all the cost-cutting, 179 House Republicans still voted against the disaster aid package with only 49 favoring it. GOP leaders had to rely on yes votes from 192 Democrats to pass it.

As with past natural disasters, the Sandy aid bill is not offset with spending cuts, meaning the aid adds to the deficit. The lone exception is an offset provision requiring that $3.4 billion for Army Corps of Engineers projects to protect against future storms be covered by an equal amount of unspecified spending cuts in other programs before next October.

The Senate on Monday rejected, 35-62, an attempt by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, to amend the final package Monday with a provision to cut federal programs across the board by one-half of 1 percent through 2021 as a way to prevent the disaster aid from swelling the U.S. debt.

As of Monday, FEMA said it spent $3.3 billion in disaster relief money for shelter, restoring power and other immediate needs arising from the storm.

New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Ohio, Delaware, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia have shared that money.

Comprehensive immigration plan coming this week: McCain

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Leading Democratic and Republican senators said on Sunday there were encouraging signs in the push to overhaul U.S. immigration laws - a top priority for President Obama's second term - and they would introduce their plan this week.

With Obama set to begin his push for immigration reform with a speech in Las Vegas on Tuesday, a group of three Democratic and three Republican senators have been working for weeks on a plan.

One of those senators, Republican John McCain of the border state of Arizona, said on ABC's "This Week" program that the group still had hard work ahead but that he was pleased with the progress and that the principles of a comprehensive plan would be put forth this week.

McCain said the plan was much like a 2007 immigration proposal that died during the presidency of George W. Bush. That plan included a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, tighter borders, a guest worker program and requirements for employers to verify workers' immigration status.

The immigration issue was largely pushed aside during Obama's first term as economic concerns weighed more heavily, but the president, who had overwhelming backing from Hispanic voters in his 2012 re-election, cited it as part of his agenda when sworn in for a second term last week.

McCain said the political aspect of immigration reform should sway any Republicans who object to a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

"We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours, for a variety of reasons, and we've got to understand that," he said.

McCain said change also was needed because "we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status. We cannot forever have children who were born here, who were brought here by their parents when they were small children, to live in the shadows, as well."

Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois, another member of the six-person Senate group, said on "Fox News Sunday" that work remained to be done but that the progress was encouraging.

"We are trying work our way through some very difficult issues but we are committed to a comprehensive approach to finally in this country having an immigration law that we can live with," he said. "We have virtually been going for maybe 25 years without a clear statement about immigration policy. That's unacceptable in this nation of immigrants."

Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey who is also a member of the immigration group, said on "This Week" that he was cautiously optimistic because of the bipartisan spirit that has prevailed in the recent reform effort.

"I see things that were once off the table for agreement and discussion being on the table with a serious pathway forward," he said.

Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, a Republican who is not a member of the group, said he had spoken with one of its members, who said he was "very optimistic" about reform.

Clegg slams EU vote, polls show boost for PM

LONDON (Reuters) - Nick Clegg, leader of the junior party in the ruling coalition, denounced David Cameron's pledge to hold a referendum on quitting the European Union, as polls on Sunday indicated the prime minister's move may gain him votes.

"It is not in the national interest when we have this fragile recovery," said Clegg, whose Lib Dems strongly favour closer EU ties, in contrast to many members of Cameron's Conservative party. "I don't think it helps at all."

He dismissed as "implausible" Cameron's plan to take back powers from Brussels before a referendum on a new treaty by 2017 that would let voters take Britain out. EU leaders have shown little wish to grant Cameron concessions and Clegg said EU talks would distract ministers from efforts to revive the economy.

Cameron, he told the BBC, would damage economic growth if he spent "years flying around from one European capital to the next, fiddling around with the terms of Britain's membership".

The Lib Dems are languishing in the polls and are unlikely to leave the coalition before an election in 2015, but the EU issue has added to strains. Cameron, who says he wants Britain to stay in the EU, last week promised a referendum if he is re-elected. It is less clear what may happen if treaties remain unchanged.

The first opinion polls published since he made his pledge of an "in-out" vote, however, showed that the prime minister may be succeeding in reversing a drift from the Conservatives to a party which campaigns for Britain to leave the European Union.

A Survation poll in the Mail on Sunday, which showed Labour unchanged and in the lead on 38 percent, put the Conservatives on 31 percent, up two points, while the UK Independence Party was down by the same margin, on 14 percent. UKIP's surge from just 3 percent in the 2010 election has raised the prospect of a split on the right that could condemn Cameron to defeat.

Another poll, by ComRes in the Independent on Sunday, showed an even more marked "Brussels bounce" for the prime minister, with the Conservatives gaining five points from last month to 33 percent and UKIP losing four points to be on 10 percent. Again, ComRes put Labour in the lead, down a point on 39 percent.

Cameron's European move worries the United States and EU allies, which want Britain to stay in the bloc. Many business leaders say it creates dangerous uncertainty.

Many Conservatives, whose party toppled previous premiers over European policy, welcomed a referendum after 2015. However, without improvement in an economy which shrank by 0.3 percent in the last quarter, Cameron's re-election is far from certain.

Nexen, CNOOC extend closing date by 30 days

TORONTO (Reuters) - Nexen Inc and China's CNOOC Ltd said they have mutually agreed to extend the closing date of CNOOC's takeover of the Canadian oil and gas producer by 30 days to March 2, 2013.

Nexen said in a statement it would also postpone the release of its 2012 fourth quarter financial results. It did not give a date for the release of the results.

CNOOC Ltd said in late December that it expects its $15.1 billion takeover of Nexen to close in the first quarter of 2013 at the earliest, a move that could be related to giving U.S. regulators more time to approve a sensitive aspect of the deal.

The company is still awaiting U.S. approval over its purchase of Nexen assets in the Gulf of Mexico after Canadian officials approved the deal last year.

An Afghan policeman stands guard at the site of a suicide attack in Kunduz city on Jan. 26, 2013. At least ten policemen were killed and 18 others, mostly civilians, were wounded in a suicide attack Saturday in a crowded area of the northeast Afghan city of Kunduz, provincial authorities said.

By Dylan Welch, Reuters

Ten police officers, including the local counter-terrorism chief, were killed in a suicide bombing in northern Afghanistan on Saturday.

Shortly after 5 p.m. local time a man driving a motorbike detonated a large bomb at a busy roundabout in the north city of Kunduz near a group of police officers, provincial police chief spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini said.

"As a result of a suicide attack 10 policemen were killed, including the head of the traffic department and the head of the counter-terrorism office," said Hussaini.

Medical staff assist a wounded blast victim at the main hospital in Kunduz city on Jan. 26, 2013.

Four civilians and five other police officers were wounded in the bombing, he said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack but militants, including the Taliban, are active in the area.

The attack came a day after a suicide bomber in a car killed at least five civilians and wounded 15 others when he attacked a NATO convoy in the north eastern province of Kapisa.

Responsibility for that attack was claimed by the Taliban via spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Taliban militants have been waging an 11-year war against Afghan President Hamid Karzai and a U.S.-led NATO force.

Family heading to Turkey to seek missing NY woman

NEW YORK (AP) ? Relatives of a missing New York City woman who disappeared during a vacation to Turkey, her first trip outside the U.S., are heading to Istanbul to look for her, her brother said Sunday.

Sarai Sierra's family was last in touch with her on Monday, the day she was supposed to start her journey home. The 33-year-old mother of two had been in Turkey on her own since Jan. 7.

Her brother David Jimenez told The Associated Press that he and Sierra's husband, Steven, were planning to leave for Turkey on Sunday night. He said he had no return date planned.

"I don't want to come home without my sister," he said.

Sierra planned to head to the Galata Bridge, a well-known tourist destination that spans the Golden Horn waterway, to take some photographs, said her mother, Betzaida Jimenez. Her daughter then supposed to begin traveling home and was scheduled to arrive in New York City on Tuesday afternoon.

Sierra's father went to pick her up at the airport and "waited there for hours" with no sign of his daughter, Jimenez said.

Sierra had planned to go on the trip with a friend but ended up going by herself when the friend couldn't make it. She was looking forward to exploring her hobby of photography, her family said.

"I was nervous. I didn't want my daughter to go," Jimenez said, but the trip had passed smoothly with Sierra in regular contact with her family and friends through text messaging and phone calls.

"She would always call and let us know, 'This is what I did today,'" Jimenez said.

When she didn't show up in New York City, her husband called the place where she had been staying, David Jimenez said. The owner of the hostel checked her room and saw that her passport, equipment chargers and other items were still there.

"It looked like she was just stepping out," he said.

The family has been in touch with authorities in their efforts to find her. No one was available to comment after hours Sunday at Istanbul police headquarters. Crime in Turkey is generally low and Istanbul is a relatively safe city for travelers, though there are areas where women would be advised to avoid going alone at night. The Galata and the nearby Galata Bridge areas have been gentrified and are home to fish restaurants, cafes and boutiques.

Sierra's children, ages 11 and 9, do not know their mother is missing, her brother said. Betzaida Jimenez said the situation has "been a nightmare."

"I'm forcing myself to get up because I have to get up," she said.

But she said the tight-knit family was holding onto their faith.

"We're praying and trusting God that she's safe somewhere and we're going to find her," she said.

NYC mayor tops $1B in gifts to Johns Hopkins Univ.

(AP) ? New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged $350 million to Johns Hopkins University, mainly to expand its interdisciplinary research on an array of issues including global health and urban revitalization as his lifetime giving to his alma mater eclipses $1 billion.

The university announced the commitment late Saturday saying it believe Bloomberg, who amassed his fortune creating the global financial services firm Bloomberg LP, is now the first person to give more than $1 billion to a single American university.

The $350 million commitment is the largest ever to the Baltimore-based university, Johns Hopkins said in a statement.

Most of the latest gift, $250 million, will be part of a larger effort to raise $1 billion to foster cross-disciplinary work at Johns Hopkins, the statement said. Funds initially will be used toward appointment of faculty for interdisciplinary work on an array of issues that also will include individualized health care delivery, sustainability of water resources and the science of learning.

The remaining $100 million is to be devoted to need-based financial aid for undergraduate students, awarding 2,600 Bloomberg scholarships in the next 10 years, it said.

It added that the latest gift brings Bloomberg's giving to the institution just more than $1.11 billion in the 49 years since he graduated ? including his first gift of $5 in 1965 only a year after he received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Johns Hopkins.

"Johns Hopkins University has been an important part of my life since I first set foot on campus more than five decades ago," Bloomberg said in the statement issued by the university. "Each dollar I have given has been well-spent improving the institution and, just as importantly, making its education available to students who might otherwise not be able to afford it."

Bloomberg added that he hoped the giving would make a difference in people's lives. "I know of no other institution that can make a bigger difference in lives around the world through its groundbreaking research ? especially in the field of public health," he added.

University president Ronald J. Daniels praised Bloomberg for being a "visionary philanthropist" for social good on the order of Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller and the school's founder, Johns Hopkins. Daniels said the chief impact of Bloomberg's gift would be to strengthen the university's multi-disciplinary approach to resolving major societal problems.

"This latest initiative allows us to greatly accelerate our investment in talented people and bring them together in a highly creative and dynamic atmosphere," Daniels added. "It illustrates Mike's passion for fixing big problems quickly and efficiently."

Money from the gift is expected to endow 50 distinguished professors to be recruited worldwide with expertise spanning traditional academic disciplines. The school said the work of those recruited would bridge disciplines and schools such as medicine, the humanities, public health and education, social science and engineering.

The New York mayor has remained closely involved with the university where he graduated in 1964, including stints on its board of trustees from 1996 to 2002 and as chairman of Johns Hopkins Initiative fundraising campaign.

The university said Bloomberg made his first $1 million commitment to the university in 1984, 20 years after his graduation. Later gifts included $120 million toward the construction of a children's section at The John Hopkins Hospital in honor of his late mother. All told, the university said, Bloomberg's philanthropy has benefited Johns Hopkins in many ways including improvements to facilities, research and the quality of its student body.

The latest gift touched off praise and excited reactions online and on the university website following the announcement.

Rank At The Top With These SEO Tips | Internet Marketing Search ...

SEO is the best way to establish your business online. If search engines feature your page very high in their results, you will receive a high volume of targeted traffic. Here are some suggestions for bringing more traffic to your site.

Promote yourself as being an expert in your niche. It is an effective way to increase your internet marketing success. Make sure that you create a site that has a specific targeted audience, as this will allow you to better enhance your SEO strategy. Get feedback from your customers regarding their preferences. This will help you determine the most successful products and services to offer.

If you have limited resources at your disposal, you may want to optimize your website for only a select number of major search engines. Using keyword-rich content and structure will give you an advantage on any engine. , Ask. But many of the major engines have their own particular nuances that are unique to themselves.

You can do this by creating a robots. txt file and plugging it into your main directory. This method hides certain files from being accessed on your website.

If you sell a product or service, you must keep in mind that offering information which readers find useful will rank you higher than your competition who focuses only on selling. It can be invaluable to add positive customer reviews and a purchase guide of your products to your website.

When trying to boost the SEO of your site, you need to be patient. Large changes in traffic volume will not immediately happen. If your website is new, it may take months for you to get more site traffic. Just like in a physical business, it takes time to build up a name.

This will help increase your search engine rankings. The meta description appears right under the website link in many search engines, so use this text to grab a potential customer?s attention. Many content management systems give you the opportunity to adjust your meta description in the editing area for the individual page.

Never ever duplicate any content on your website, or Google will penalize you for it by reducing your page rank. Instead of rewriting the same articles, use new content to attract different readers.

Don?t hop from niche to niche, but be sure to provide plenty of content spanning many different topics. In other words, provide relative content from different aspects of your niche. If your topic is nutrition, provide articles on healthy recipes, wellness tips, vitamins and supplements, and more. By being diverse within your niche, more users will get to your site by searching for specific terms.

Think about the possibilities of podcasting. A podcast can include audio or video content that includes relevant, interesting material directed at your consumers. This content delivery method has really taken off among the general public, and all it takes to get in on this is a digital voice recorder or camcorder. The search engines then are able to grab your podcast descriptions.

Choose a domain name for your site that people can readily recall and also gives a clear indication of what you are offering. These tools are helpful since your website will be easy to find due to the ease of pronunciation.

Have web analytics set up before you start applying SEO to your site. Analytics software is an important investment that allows you to see which of your tactics are working well and which are failing.

Try to avoid using a lot of symbols like underscores in a URL. This makes it harder for search engines to find your website, especially if keywords are not incorporated.

Only work with directories that have quality sites to exchange links with. There are too many worthless links you could accept. Avoid directories that list outdated sites or those that are not designed well. Screen any potential web directories carefully before submitting your site.

If you utilize audio or video as part of your website?s content mix, consider including transcripts as part of the post. Providing a transcript not only helps viewers that don?t have the right browser plugins for your audio/video; it also provides you more content for the search engines to rank as relevant. This can get you higher in search results.

Search engine bots look for new material on sites, so a consistently updated blog is a great method for giving them an excuse to look at your site. In addition, if you write great articles, people will share them. These readers will return again and again to see what else you have to say, and their friends will start visiting your site as well.

The SEO tips you just read about will currently assist you in building your search engine results rankings. However, search engine algorithms change constantly. Remember to stay informed about search engine optimization so your website?s rank will stay high.

Old-Fashioned Motherhood: Women in Combat

And I began to think about the many reasons to have women home during times of war, "keeping those homefires burning."

Those Left Behind

The first thing that came to mind was the draft. If both the fathers AND the mothers of children are called up to arms, WHO takes care of the children?

Who DOES keep the homefires burning, keeps the money coming in, keeps the neighborhoods functioning, keeps the homes protected from theft and the children from harm?

WHO???

A Bloodthirsty People

Have we, as a country, as a society, really come to the point where we are as bloodthirsty and warlike as the ancient Greeks and Romans before us? If we haven't already, we soon will be, if our women become as hardened and troubled as our soldiers both past and present. War is one of the most disturbing things that humankind deals with, and if our soldiering men are having such a dfficult time with post-traumatic syndrome and other such mental troubles, what will happen to nurturing, feminine women??

Is the female sex demanding, as did Lady Macbeth?

Come you spirits
That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here. . . .
Come to my woman's breasts
And take my milk for gall, you murdering ministers.

What WILL happen when mothers become "murdering ministers?"

My thoughts turn to the Jaredites, in the Book of Mormon. Near the end of their civilization, (which came about because of all the fighting and killing among them-- in essence, they destroyed themselves!) they had become so bloodthirsty and hardened that they required their women and their children to fight, in addition to all their men.

And it came to pass that when they were all gathered together, every one to the army which he would, with their wives and their children?both men, women and?children?being armed with weapons of war, having shields, and breastplates, and head-plates, and being clothed after the manner of?war?they did march forth one against another to battle; and they fought all that day, and conquered not. (Ether 15:15)
?The destruction was so great among their people, that there was not even anyone left to bury their dead.
And so swift and speedy was the?war?that there was none left to bury the dead, but they did march forth from the shedding of blood to the shedding of blood, leaving the bodies of both men, women, and children strewed upon the face of the land, to become a prey to the worms of the flesh. (Ether 14:22)
This future, with all the wars going on all around the world that OUR troops are fighting in, is not that far into the future. How quickly has the unthinkable always happened? When looking back to history and those who have come before, it's sooner than we like to think.

Irony

In all of this, the media is speaking from two polar opposite opinions. On the one hand, arming women to fight in bloody and disturbing wars is being applauded, while cries for taking away personal weapons of protection from families are reaching fever pitches.

There is a great deal of talk of "protecting children," but who protects the young when BOTH their parents are serving in distant lands, killing the innocent children of our enemies? The State????

How can a mother keep the milk of human kindness in her heart for her own little ones, knowing that her actions are destroying the lives of other babies??

Lady Macbeth, again, shows us that a woman cannot have both.

Gender

Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

and

By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners.

Men and women ARE different, and yet equal.?

To deny that fact is not only scientifically ridiculous, it is also silly in the emotional, mental, and spiritual senses. Misinterpreting equality in such a way is nonsensical.?

Each have their own stewardships that work within their natural abilities and talents. BOTH ARE NEEDED-- in their heaven-endowed duties. They should then help and support one another in those roles, as equal partners.

The prophets then go on:

...we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

The modern world that women are trying to navigate is more confusing and troubling than ever. For me, this is not a day to rejoice. It is a day of mourning. My pleading prayers for peace will be stronger and more heartfelt than ever.

I raise my voice in protest-- I cannot stand by and let this disturbing issue stand, unchallenged.

May the Lord help our society come to its senses, before it's too late!!!?

Fitium review?Fitium is good if you follow the challenges. To get the most of the site you need to follow the coaching challenges which I found really motivating, especially as I have a tendency to easily get bored.

On other diets I have always felt hungry or would get aches and pains in the middle of the day, but with the?Fitium diet plan I sometimes couldn?t finish my plate!

Rats 'eat' part of woman's car

A Suffolk woman returned from a holiday to find rats had eaten through parts of her car causing damage put at ?1,200.

Jill Delaney, 74, from Kentford, said the electrics had gone, rubber was stripped from pedals and the car had to be towed to a garage to be fixed.

A spokesman from her insurance company, Saga, said: "Rats appear to have got into the car and caused... damage."

The company that manages her property and surrounding land said the landlord had called in a pest controller.

Mrs Delaney left her car in the driveway of her rural property while visiting relatives in Cornwall for Christmas.

"The day after I got back - it was 28 December - I tried to open my car and the central locking didn't work," she said.

"Then I saw the rubber on the pedals had been completely shredded and there were rat droppings everywhere.

"I know a rat dropping when I see one."

'Burnt toast'

Mrs Delaney's five-year-old Ford Fusion was towed to a garage in Newmarket and photographs sent to her insurance company.

"It took three weeks to fix because they kept finding more damage," Mrs Delaney said.

Robin Wiley, who has been a pest controller in Cambridgeshire for more than 70 years, said Mrs Delaney's rat problem was not something he had come across before.

"I would expect mice, or even squirrels to cause that kind of damage, but it's not the sort of thing rats would normally do," he said.

However, Mrs Delaney was adamant the damage was caused by rats.

A spokesman from Saga said: "Pictures taken by the garage show the extent of the problem.

"Rats appear to have got into the car and caused ?1,200 worth of damage to the wiring and seatbelt."

Although her landlord is dealing with the rats and debris in barns bordering her tenanted property, Mrs Delaney said she was worried it could happen again.

"I risk my no-claims if I have to go to the insurance company again," she said.

"Pest controllers told me rats hate creosote, so I've filled a cat litter tray with the stuff and put it under the car.

"I've also put out burnt toast because I hear they hate that too," she added.

Brought to you by Global Home Improvement

Standing seam metal roofing is the most versatile roofing in the world and with over 35 color selections it can also be the most challenging to select your favorite! At Global Home Improvement we think all metal roofing colors look great, but here is a simple guide to choosing the color that best fits your home and style.

Check out Our Metal Roof Color Chart for All 35 Color Choices.

House Style ? Country Farm House
Recommended Color ? Colonial Red

Farm-house-colonial-red

This color evokes the warm feeling and rich color of bricks used in colonial times. Colonial red is often chosen as an alternative to brilliance red or ?screaming? red as some of our customers call it because of its subtle yet statement making hue.

House Style ? Historic or Provincial
Recommended Color ? Charcoal Gray

Provinical-Charcoal-Grey

Charcoal gray is widely popular because of its neutral color. Additionally, when installed on historic or provincial homes it can replicate the color pattern of natural slate at a fraction of the cost. Charcoal gray is a color that looks good on a variety of homes because it is dark and dramatic but when the light reflects off of it, it shows great dimension, contrast and contour.

House Style ? Contemporary
Recommended Color ? Mansard Brown

Contemporary-Mansard-Brown

I know what you?re thinking, mansard brown on a contemporary home when you have all these other choices. And the answer is yes! Many contemporary homes in the area were built in the 1970?s with a T-111 wood panel siding and the mansard brown is the perfect color to go with that type of siding. It is dark, rich and goes well in wooded areas with homes that are set back from the street. Other popular contemporary choices are medium bronze and dark bronze.

House Style ? Federal or Prairie Style
Recommended Color ? Patina Green

If your home is grandeur in size and stature then consider going with a patina green color that replicates the look of aged copper. Patina green may seem dramatic to some but look around and you will realize how often this color comes into play and blends in with a city or towns architecture. All major cities have this color because it?s what copper looks like after 100+ years with the best known example, the Statue of Liberty!

House Style ? Accents for Any Home
Recommended Color ? Metallic Copper

All homeowners love copper but many of them want the shiny metallic look of copper that only lasts 1-2 years before it starts to oxidize! That is where metallic copper painted standing seam comes into play. This metallic copper will not rust, rot or fade for over 35 years and costs a fraction of what real copper does. Consider a metallic copper bay window, front porch or back portico for your metal roofing project.
